I had always thought that Altair couldn't swim because people just didn't know how to in the past. Some Medieval trials included having someone go out in deep water, and if they sank, they were innocent, if they floated, they were guilty.
But then again, I'm not too sure when people started learning. The dates always confuse me >w>

he lived in Masyaf most of his life. the closest water source was a raging river in a canyon far below the Assassin fortress, which you see in the beginning of ACI. i guess because of that, it was too unsafe to learn how, or they just never thought it would be necessary. or, he's got a lot of armor, and it's all really heavy. that could be why. maybe he just never learned.
all that, or maybe Ubisoft just wanted to give us another handicap in Acre. XD

I feel ni the water about 3 times. First one because a guard threw me, the second time was when I was jumping form those beams, and missed terribly and went in the water, and the third time I feel from the View Point and feel in the water I still don't understand what happened there..

Mine's worse. You know that stream you run into when getting to your first mission? Well, I thought, hur hur, I should walk in the stream. After all, I have a HORSE. Nope. Drowned miserably in a KNEE HIGH stream. -___-

the first time i fell in the water in AC1, i was all like "WTF?! OH NO I FORGOT YOU CANT SWIM!!!!" i tried climbing out but that is practically impossible once ur down there thats it... i was so scared of falling in the water in AC2 when my friend was like "Uh..you know you can swim right?"
