I do both sketch, and painted commissions! I take on no more than one painted commission at a time in order to maintain a turnaround time I deem reasonable, given the amount of work required. While there are some depictions and/or imagery that I strictly wont do (outlined below) I reserve the right to decline other works if I feel it necessary not because I find them strange or distasteful, but because I may feel that they’re things beyond the scope of work I usually do, which means I may not be able to achieve the level of quality that they deserve. Like any artist I do have strengths and weaknesses, and generally speaking adult oriented artwork with a focus on the kinds of themes commonly depicted in my gallery of works are good area's. If for any reason I feel the need to decline the work after discussing what may be required of me, I will say so right away.
If you’re wishing to commission me for a painted illustration then please contact me first via email ( doublethickcustardart@gmail.com) in order to receive a quote. This is a quote, and work will only be started after payment is received upfront.
Please note: pledges to lower tiers through my patreon also accumulate toward a commission when the base commission rate is reached in lifetime pledges. ($250/$60)
Calculation of cost
I calculate cost based upon a standard hourly wage in my country and what minimum hours of work I know I will need to do, so a firm quote can be given after I understand what will be required of me. Generally speaking, sketches usually run around $60, and painted illustrations $250 as a starting rate. All quotes and payments are in $US and where necessary I calculate currency conversions based on the value of $AU on that day.
Exceptions are made for commissioners located in Australia, who are welcome to make payment and receive a quote in $AU
Rights to artwork
I as the artist retain all rights to all work that I do unless otherwise agreed upon. This means that I retain the right to reproduce any artwork I create for the purposes of portfolio collections, or display on my personal website, blog, or other third party online galleries of my own. My work may be reproduced in print for personal use by commissioner's, but not for resale.
My work may not be altered in any fashion or my signature removed. In the event a commissioner would like to request that the artwork produced be withheld from any public gallery, not reproduced in print or showcased in any portfolio’s, then the rights to the work will need to be purchased at an additional fee (the usual total cost for an artwork and rights would be double the cost of the artwork's quote) or no less than $500. If the work is to be reproduced for commercial purposes then an alternative agreement will need to be negotiated.
Given that the artwork I produce is primarily for adult audiences the following is necessary to state.
- Depict children/minors (for the purposes of objectification)
- Vomit/Scat
- Non-consent (It’s more fun when everyone’s having fun)
- Racist or hateful content
- Inflation
- Anything else I haven’t thought of at my own discretion.
What I might decline (but will do my best to find a way!)
- Anthropomorphised characters. This is highly dependent on the design itself as to whether or not I think I can do it and pull it off well. I probably can! However, let me take a look and be sure first and if I think I’ll have any issues I’ll say so. Please don’t let this deter you, I do like to challenge myself.

I am a writer and have no visual references of my character. Can I still commission you?
Of course! I am very comfortable with working from written queues, however this can often mean that I might require some more details than usual. Oftentimes with these things, it is far more important to be specific than poetic. Providing photo references that are relevant to certain components of the characters design or make up are a great start, and help me as the artist get a feel for who the character is and how they look. I emphasise who here, because a character's disposition plays a large role in how the character looks - for example a very charismatic, happy character will carry their brow quite differently to a character that is shy, ill tempered or withdrawn. If you are happy to work with me in providing me with that information, then I can make it happen!
Do you do comic-style layout, page or panel commissions?
I can, yes. This kind of thing varies greatly in the amount of work involved, and so discussing thoroughly what it is you would be looking for would be necessary before I could offer any kind of quote. I have done these before to great effect and have nothing against doing them in future, I do enjoy them a lot! If it is an entire short (20pgs+/-) comic that you would be interested in commissioning me to do for the purposes of being published to other websites, then a quote would be calculated on a per-page basis.
Do you do character designs?
Yes. This is something that requires a lot of patience on behalf of both the artist and the person wanting the design (writer, rp-er, or artist etc). If you're willing to sit and chat via IM with me, then I'm more than happy to do this. Ideally, a full body portrait of the painted character on a blank background would be what the end result would be.
Do you have a waiting list?
I do not keep a waiting list because simply put - I don’t like to keep people waiting. When a commission slot is available (for a painted commission, or a sketch) then I will make a post regarding that on my blog and other social media. It is a case of first-in-best-dressed
Do you offer refunds if I am unhappy with the work?
This really depends upon the situation. My goal is always that nobody is unhappy with the work I am paid to do. I like to make my limits and abilities very clear from the beginning, as well as cost in the form of a firm quote. I like to provide a clear portfolio so that the style of my art is well understood (which should of course be why anyone would commission me!) I like to keep communication clear and open and provide a sketch with any required explanations in order to be checked over and approved or adjusted if necessary before I begin painting. At this stage, I have offered my time as requested in order to complete the artwork, and if for any unforeseeable reason no agreement can be made and no final sketch settled upon, I will refund the remainder of the amount after deduction of the cost of the sketch.
Once the sketch has been approved and painting has begun, I cannot offer refunds for the work and my time, extenuating circumstances excluded.
I want to commission you, but I do not want my name/handle attached to the commission, is this okay?
Absolutely!
Given the nature of the art I primarily do, anonymity is something I understand and respect. Though withholding the artwork from display in any of my online galleries is not something I will do unless full rights to the artwork have been paid for, not tagging, commenting on, or naming the commissioner attached to the artwork is an option. All you need to do is let me know that you would like the commission to remain anonymous. I take any requests for privacy seriously.
How long do you estimate my commission will take?
I try to get sketches done as quickly as possible, and the same goes for painting that may or may not come thereafter (depending on the type of commission) Because I only take on one commission at a time without waiting lists, I am able to give reasonable updates and estimates on how much time I feel it may take to complete, you only need ask! (within reason, of course. Good art takes time and patience!) How long I may estimate that something will take is dependent on
My present workload
The complexity of the piece - a large painting may take as many hours to complete as a few acceptable working weeks (7-9hr/day, 5days/week)
I have made changes to a character, but the commission has already been started. Can this be fixed?
Yes and no. I would strongly warn against settling on commissioning the artwork until you are personally happy with the idea/character design you have. Short of that, changes depend heavily upon many factors
What stage I am at in creating the art
How major the changes are.
If any change requires something be redrawn or started again then I will need to consider the original quote void. With the extra hours in redoing the work with new information not previously provided, I may request that more will need to be paid for the piece if it’s to be completed in full. For smaller changes that do not compromise the artwork as a whole, and that can be easily added/taken away I can do so, and I do not mind at all! I prefer to discuss things and find a happy solution should any changes arise.
Do you charge for revisions of the artwork?
Yes and no! The entire point of the sketch is to ensure everything is just right if the commission will be painted. Even if a sketch is as far as the commission goes, I always expect that I may need to go back and tweak minor things that I may be at fault for overlooking. I like to be careful and thorough, and encourage everyone to let me know if I’ve made any oversights, missed the mark, or if anything should be changed. These things are all a part of getting it right! However, it is important to keep in mind that I am but one humble artist and though I do my best, indecisiveness or a lack of understanding that results in many time consuming changes I am not at fault for, may result in me feeling the need to halt the work where it is. To avoid this, it is important to be clear and concise when providing me with references and information from the get-go.
Examples of work
Please note that much of my artwork is cropped within my Deviant Art gallery in order to abide by the rules set out by site staff. Full versions of those works can be found in other personal online galleries.

Do you plan on doing another work on your OC "Ophaniel "? Or do you plan on making prints of that piece?
I really love/admire that piece in particular.

Thank you so much MyNonsenseSpot I'm pretty flattered that you like him so much I hadn't made any plans to do artwork of him recently (or make prints for that matter) However I'm a little taken aback by how many people have asked after him here and there. I do really love drawing him, so I'll put him on my list of characters to doodle when I sit down. As far as prints are concerned, if I get the opportunity to run any off I'll definitely include him in there
Thank you so much again? Its a pretty warm fuzzy feeling when someone asks after something so specific as you have.

I have another question.
Do you currently have a list of artwork you've already done of available? Or something similar artwork that you might do a style of.
Something to help me get a feel of what I might be looking for commission wise.
