Description So this is a fun project. I'm wanting to utilize the laser cutter at the shop I do most of my heavy duty building at for props later on down the road. I'm a fan of the Tron Uprising TV series, and after seeing this in the last episode, I thought it would be a perfect candidate for a trial run. I do intend to finish this, however, so it's not just some random thing I threw together for a simple test.

Anyways, this is laser cut acrylic sheet. The pattern was derived from a screen capture of the item in the show, and the pattern was drawn in Adobe Illustrator. Our laser cutter accepts vector format, but only in legacy formats. As such, there were some issues with a few of the paths not translating correctly in the SVG format, so I'll have to rework it. However, for what it is, it's certainly not a bad example of the process.

I remember seeing this a while back, probably about a year ago. Have you had any progress with it? I still think this looks awesome!

For an item of deathly power, the Mod disk sure takes the cake for shear elegance regardless of a few out of place lines.

Thank you torsoboyprops for brining us this distinctive piece of Tron hardware that made the franchise so vibrant and powerful!

Keep trying new things and making new decisions as you continue to push the limits of your potential.

God bless

With well wishes ~ from Monturrock

Don't suppose you'll make any of these for sale?

Well, I haven't been able to work out some issues I was having with the laser cutter. It was wanting to "close" some of the shapes into squares and triangles, even though the only data in the file was represented as lines and circles. 95% of it looks great, but there are a few errors per disc. They're not always the same either, so it something in the laser's control system that is causing the error, telling the laser to fire when it shouldn't fire. I don't know how to fix that, so it's not likely I'll have any suitable pieces any time soon. I'm not even sure where my own copy IS at the moment, otherwise I'd offer that one since I'm doing anything with it. lol :-/

The one you made here looks pretty good.

Look in the lower right portion of the disc, and you'll see some angled lines going off in different directions. That's not supposed to be there, and it has happened randomly on every disc I've tried.

could mirror the corruptness that the disc causes in its user

That is flippin EPIC! I'm trying to learn how to utilize LED lights to make light lines on some of my costumes, but not coming up with much online; any thoughts?

Check out The Replica Prop Forum. A lot of people are using EL Sheet, which is what they used in the movie (not LEDs). They used custom-cut sheets in the movie, and that gets crazy expensive for the casual costumer, but there's a lot you can do with simple sheets, and a bunch of people at The RPF have accomplished really good costumes using sheets they purchased online at various suppliers.

What are some places to look?

Go to the RPF and do a search on "Tron Costume" and read up on what people are doing. I can't relay that info to you because it's quite literally over a hundred pages of content. You'll need to do the research, but it really shouldn't be more than a Google search or two.

Are you going to be adding a red tint or any lights to the second try? Glad to see someone try to make this, I LOVED that episode!

I've actually made more progress than what you see here, but some geometry is off in the laser cutter's print driver causing it to link lines together that shouldn't be. As such, I haven't produced any better copies, but I've worked out the orange tint in the form of some transparent fluorescent orange vinyl applied to the backside and then laser cut to shape.
