Description
These are replicas of the costumes worn in the live action trailer "We Are ODST" for the game Halo 3: ODST. The costumes produced by Legacy Effects for the commercial differ greatly from the armor worn in the in-game characters, so these are not intended to be "generic" ODST costumes.The armor components were created from a variety of methods. About half of the pieces were custom-made 3D models (designed and built in-house) and then printed out and assembled with the Pepakura process. Details were then sculpted in Bondo and miscellaneous plastic parts. Other parts were created out of cardboard and Bondo. All of the parts were then molded and fiberglass castings were made.

A year to build (or, more precisely, "11+ months," and several thousand dollars in construction costs.
In case you don't believe me in that dollar amount, you're looking at probably 5-6 gallons of rubber for all the molds we produced(over 30 individual molds; cost of rubber at $200/gallon), several gallons of fiberglass resin (at roughly $30/gallon), who knows how much fiberglass cloth (each individual part is multi-layered), the cost of building our own vacuum former (a few hundred dollars at least), plus the cost of all the undersuit items. Not to mention the costs incurred by sculpting all the original masters, and all the paint and logistical costs (glues, brushes, gloves, etc.). Aside from the rough list provided here, I can't really begin to hammer out an itemized list of all the costs that went into this, but rest assured, it's well into the thousands of dollars.
I know this is outside of the scope of your question, but this is a prime example of the cost of such extensive builds in general. Often times I get asked to make costumes or props for people, and they offer very little money without understanding what actually goes into this stuff. And the above paragraph just represents the monetary costs alone, and doesn't even include labor. So as sort of a best-guess estimation of the "actual" cost, you're probably looking at $7000 to $8500, if not more. I am really bad at estimating costs, however, and generally underestimate them. :-/
Also consider that this was not done alone, so that number would be split between two people, in roughly equal parts.
