Great work, but I think it would be smart to credit Elvgren for inspiration.

I agree. It's *spot* on Elvgren, and kudos for that, but credit his way is not only a cool thing to do, but probably legally wise.
This is an iconic piece of work.

Thanks for agreeing. I just looked at the original image in my Gil Elvgren book, and this background has been superimposed from the original image. I'm not sure if Elvgren's work is public domain, but I still find it important and polite to credit inspiration, and certainly if work is taken from another piece - copyright issue or not.
