Description
Xipe Totec: Aztec god of Spring, vegetation, and disease, among other things. He flays himself daily to give food to humanity, and is said to have been the god who invented war.During his yearly festival, the corpses of human sacrifices were carefully flayed, and the skins were worn by his priests for the entirety of the 20 day celebration, after which they were removed and carefully stored to symbolize rebirth and the arrival of spring.

The Aztecs were bestial in that they worshipped evil demon gods that demanded endless human sacfrifice.Β
It is specdulated that had the Spaniards not put a stop to it, the AZTECS WOULD HAVE BEEN overthrown by their revolt of subjugated tribes . As it was, the revolt & overthrow was about to start when the Spaniards came, and these tribes assisted the Spaniards.Β

This a really great piece! I love how graphic the shadows are and the thick, uneven boarder. They really go well with the macabre subject. I also love the overall color palate. They're really sophisticated. The details in this are great too. I love the headdress and costume!
I don't know much about Aztec culture, so the little back story really helps to make me more interested in the topic.

Actually, if memory serves, during the festival of Tlacaxipehualitzli the flayed skins were worn by a multitude of warriors (and of course, the Aztec emperor at one point), as the various warriors engaged in a series of mock battles across Tenochtitlan and Tlacopan. The skins would be worn until they had completely rotted off of the wearers.
That aside, this is a beautiful rendering of the Red Tezcatlipoca.

Haha the inks- I suppose with enough time even that one wretched brush in flash can look good.
I really like your gallery btw, especially the fact that you don't shy away from backgrounds. Excellent work!

Ah. The Aztec gods. Is there any sort of human flesh they'd say no to?
I like how you use colors. Your style and colors seem to go well together. Plus your lines and shapes have a good flow and energy to them. (they remind me of that one animation thingy, Afro Samurai in a way).
Nice and kewl in a way I don't mind. Obscure mythology- well, obscure in that most people learn about classical greek gods before hearing about the Aztec ones- is always kewl to see reference in a new, different style.

Yeah, mythology has to be one of my favorite things ever. Even the Greek gods pretty much rock, but I despise the way they're taught in schools. Great stories are overanalyzed to the point of being extremely dry and boring.

When they are taught. I studied them on my own way before any class I had ever bothered to get around to them.
The Greek Myths are important for their importance to western culture. They do get overanalyzed, but at least somebody is reading it. Of course, discovering new mythologies are fun cuz they can add to one's understanding and even inspire new ideas.
One of the many reasons I like the bloody mesoamerican mythologies.

Haha thanks! I'm probably going to be fixing a lot of the Diablo 2 over the weekend, it ended up a bit too dark and it's hard to see a lot of the detail. After spending all that time putting the detail in, I kinda have to show it

This came out so badass, Doug! The highlights are all really clear on this one! If you want, next time around try adding another darker value into your shadows to make that stuff pop too. If not, I still dig the lighting either way.
Man, the Aztecs were brutal. XD
