Hot, dry, sandy, yellow. As far as the eye could see. Desert dunes stretching in every possible direction. A pale greyish yellow sky. And a blazing yellow sun, scorching the few living beings that dared to travel the dry expanse. One of which being the tired, dirty figure of a lone stallion. Trudging slowly over the drifts. A small cloud of dust rising behind his dragging hooves. Minos had been walking for hours, he'd left a little oasis early the previous morning and had been trudging along the past day and a half, walking with no specific destination. His throat was parched and his coat was thickly layered with dust and sand. He heaved a heavy breath and he reached the crest of another dune. He blinked his exhausted eyes, trying to focus on a vague formation several dunes away. He wasn't sure if it was actually something or a mirage.
It took some time to stumble over the next few dunes but finally Minos discovered a very real cluster of scrawny trees and bushes, dried grasses and clumps of stone gathered around a small pool of water. He trotted eagerly to the water and dipped his dusty nose in the water. He proceeded to graze on the dry grasses until he felt exhaustion wash over him and sleep closed his tired eyes. He spent the night grazing and taking frequent drinks from the pool. When the sun rose Minos debated continuing his travels but he was feeling quite worn out so he figured he'd just hang around this oasis for a little while. After a long drink and good roll in the dirt Minos began grazing again, sampling some of the leaves from the bushes but determining they were not tasty. The morning sun wasn't hot yet and he soon enough dozed off again, feeling refreshed and comfortable in the shade of a thin tree.
He didn't rest for long as his slumber was interrupted by a sharp smell, jerking his head up Minos flicked his ears, quickly becoming alert. He caught the faint sound of yapping and growls, in the distance, but growing louder. He didn't think there were any other creatures out here. Curious, he trotted up to the top of a dune to try and see, his ears tensed and he froze as the racket grew closer. It was just a few seconds later that the first dogs appeared, followed by many others. They were moving quickly, followed by a cloud of racket, barking and yapping, growling as they ran, following a lean looking brown dog. Minos hesitated a second but realized quickly that they were heading in his direction, they'd likely already taken notice of him, maybe even followed his trail. Without wasting another second he turned around and slid down the sandy slope. There were only a few dunes between himself and the wild dogs, they'd reach the oasis in no time. And Minos wasn't planning to greet them when they arrived.
Quickly setting off in the opposite direction Minos flew into a choppy canter and bounded up dune, clearing it he jumped into a gallop as he cleared the next, flatter, dune. Sand flew from beneath his hooves and a cloud of dust rose around him as he skimmed over the sand, legs flying in a blur as he found a steady rhythm. The wild dogs were getting closer, or at least a few of them were, they didn't sound as loud but he could hear a few of them panting and fast paw falls behind him. He sped up, ears pinned flat against his head, tail streaming behind, sand flying in his face as he leaped up the side of another dune. He didn't know much about the dogs but he knew he could run for hours, so he hoped they would tire out and give up the chase. They weren't getting closer now, he could hear them a steady distance away. So he kept his steady pace and galloped on.
He wasn't sure how far he ran or when the dogs stopped chasing him. At one point he lost focus of anything but his pounding heart, he slowed his pace, trotting tiredly. He felt a dull pain in his left foreleg, he must of pulled something while leaping over dune after dune. Breathing heavily he slowed to a walk and trudged along. Once again alone in a vast expanse of empty yellow sand.
