Description
Possible Whateley Universe concept. Commercially available suits for fliers. Probably has limited profitability and distribution. Mostly Mutants with flight, frequent passengers, wannabe's and fetishist. The suit is a "Smart Latex," it looks and feels like natural latex but breaths incredibly well while providing some insulation and armor if the temperature drops.
WARNING: this suit is not a parachute nor does it confer flight.
Probably available in late November and early December 2006 in the Whateley Universe, mostly in outlets in Texas.
I'm toying with various nicknames for the suit such as a "slapsuit" or the above Flight Skinz.
It is mostly designed for the Mutant who works for a living and was field tested by Corrina O'Neal ETCR&R's a member of the Maintenance department and by Hangfire one of the team members. (Still trying to figure out if it is feasible for Corrina to be known as Hangfire publicly and if she will get the choice with the MCO knowing her real identity before and after.
This is one of the designs, I have yet to name it Corrina's is a mix of Red and Gold much like the Dark Phoenix. she has another one with Grey and Green.
The suit comes standard with altimeter, watch function, and compass with bearing. (GPS function cost extra) there are also hip pockets for storing things like an MID/MMID/Drivers License/Emergency Cash

very awesome design. I'd love to see it in color.

A most interesting design my friend, based on Hangfire's suit is it? It should have some serious thermal protection then. Not to mention an overall durability. Any extra special features? or optional upgrades?

Or how about "Slipsuit" still kinda fits the latex thing and conjures slipstream as well.
That said if you made the hip circles out of metal and contoured them to lessen possible drag then you could have the storage be inside of that and you open them by slapping it hard. Which would bring us back to slapsuit.
Personally I would worry about external pockets filling with air at speed and increasing drag (or inflating the suit in hilarious fashion)

Not designed to hold big things lol, but you can buy a matching backpack and carry harness! (for giving relatives a ride)

Oh. Sure. I was still thinking just for ID and a few small items. Maybe all of .5 inches thick when collapsed.

LOL but you want people to buy the backpack and the matching gloves and other style lol
It's a conspiracy to make money! Don't they know this is a socialist nation now :รพ then again Texans don't really go for that concept much.

Oh well if THAT'S the case then you want the low end version of the suit to have internal hip pockets so that they are difficult to get into and then the step up has the shiny metal compartments that are SO much easier to use but are still only big enough to hold your basic stuff (maybe you could get your keys in there if they arn't on a ring or you could by the key chain accessory designed to fit in the compartment) but if you need to carry something thicker than a pack of cards you'll have to get the backpack.

Not sure you want much metal on the costumes might make it difficult at airport metal detectors especially if you have to stand in the MCO line.
A wanted small pockets (on this design) because it helps keep the body line and helps reduce wind resistance. There is also probably a "Cargo" version lol

It's also easier for a PK superman's PK field to handle.

Well It would be easier for someone like Ayla anyway. The PK Supermen don't seem to have much of an issue with extra stuff so long is it isn't overly detached (like a cape) but I can see what you mean.

Even Superman takes more damage to his cape then the rest of his costume.

This is what I'm saying. Business suit gets shredded rather than obliterated because parts of it are in the field. Same with the cape but it's more likely to get damaged because it's even more divorced.

Depends on how far the field protects. skin tight field would not, one that extends 2 millimeters will protect some clothing but not others.

I was working from the "4cm rule" they established for a power being considered an internal manifestation. You make a good point though, I suppose that 4cm would be the maximum it could extend but certainly not the minimum.

Love the design.
Does 'smart latex' allow oils/liquids to pass? Stiletto could use something that breathes a bit better, but wouldn't want to take a chance on accidentally burning someone if the acid from her skin was able to seep through...
And what colors can it be ordered in?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
DPRagan In reply to EzriLell [2009-05-10 03:32:28 +0000 UTC]
Not sure it will help Stiletto, as it's designed to keep the "Second Skin" while pulling sweat away from the body to get more mainstream usage.
BTW is her sweat acid or bio-dis-assemblers? because it does act too odd to be an acid or alkali, possibly something she will find out when she goes in for in-depth power testing.
Kind of like a naturally made bio-tech. Smart latex has some gadget level micro-adapters (not small enough to be nanotech)

EzriLell In reply to DPRagan [2009-05-10 04:13:20 +0000 UTC]
At this point, all that is known is that the oils and sweat excreted through her skin (her saliva and other bodily secretions have not been tested as yet) both break down any material they come into contact with with the exception of natural rubber/latex, ceramics and certain, extremely strong/high-quality glasses.
They are particularly effective against metals and are the means by which her body 'atterns' those materials and stores them as memory engrams which she can call up at will to be recreated.
If the 'smart latex' material is designed to wik away sweat, then it would likely pass the secretions she is trying to keep away from other people. Unless of course, as you say, the 'smart' part of the suit could identify and filter, or just not pass those chemicals.
That's why I was kind of hoping to work in some cross-over time with Splice at some point and come up with a symbiotic organism that could feed on those secretions in exchange for some other benefits, even if nothing more than shape shifting into various outfits.

A suit that does that would have to be custom made, Splice might do that but even natural items have some trace metals in it. Hmmmm

Yeah, I'm still kicking stuff around, but I was thinking that Alex may get so desperate for human contact that she does something stupid and gets into some of Splice's projects. Which of course, would get her into @$$loads of trouble and require some effort from Splice and Mimir and company to extricate her.
In the end, it could result in something like what she was after, but the emotional roller coaster leading to that point would be pretty traumatic.

You're very right of course.
I just get to running and it's tough to loose all that momentum you know?
But then, I tend to think in volumes, so an idea like that could be three books away. I mean, she only just got to the school and I'm already approaching 80,000 words.
Imagine how long it could take to get to that level of frustration. It could be another 100,000 words away!

Another thing to think about is you don't know if there is any metal in the micro-assemblers.

EzriLell In reply to DPRagan [2009-05-10 06:14:29 +0000 UTC]
True. But if all of the functional components are encased in the latex, then it could still work out.
I'm still leaning toward an engineered organism designed specifically for her metabolism ~if~ I ever actually do anything like that. I sort of already did it with Daray in a previous book so I'm not sure I want to go there again.
I suppose time will tell. lol

Muwahahahahaha! Curses you figured out my dastardly plan!
Disassembling metals to be used to incorporating it as support structure in bio-combat armor, there are trace metals in most biological entities. Osteoblasts and osteoclast already do this to bone.
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
EzriLell In reply to DPRagan [2009-05-11 04:27:56 +0000 UTC]
This is true.
And since her secretions are capable of breaking down just about anything, that would give Splice potential access to materials such as Neutronium for use in her own creations. IMagine a neutronium-infused bio-armor.
Now, one thing that Splice more than likely could make use of, and can sample off Alexia, would be the engrams that store patterned metals. If she could figure out how to replicate her manifestation abilities, then she could use those engrams to create piles of whatever metal she needs.

Would requite a manifestior bio-device.
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
EzriLell In reply to DPRagan [2009-05-11 04:46:38 +0000 UTC]
Which should technically be possible. I mean, a bio-engineer would stand a much better chance of replicating mutant powers than just about anyone else.
The ability to sample and recreate genetic material, even if said material isn't entirely understood, would go miles toward that end. It would only really be problematic where conscious thought is required to direct the minutia of such powers (TK field shape and strength, shape of manifested objects, etc). But the ability to tap into the powers themselves is almost entirely biological for most abilities.

DPRagan In reply to EzriLell [2009-05-11 04:53:25 +0000 UTC]
Maybe and a bio-devisor probably could do it but it would take an inordinate amount of time to replicate gold or platinum and would be easier to buy it with Profits from her inventions.

EzriLell In reply to DPRagan [2009-05-11 04:55:21 +0000 UTC]
True, however, I would think that someone like Splice would be more interested in other materials. Things that are much more difficult to acquire, and that Stiletto is able to create in much larger volumes.

Some metals probably would not go well with organic constructs without being imprisoned in organic "buckey balls"

Buckey Balls are made of carbon!!
I get your point though. But much like you said earlier, metals in organic suspension in order to strengthen the structure as a whole, but at a microscopic level.

EzriLell In reply to DPRagan [2009-05-12 04:41:24 +0000 UTC]
True.
However, they would tent to loose quite a few of their remarkably attractive traits if the outside was covered or coated in something.
The strength of the structure though, would still be just as impressive.

And how about, since it's kinda like latex, the name 'slicksuit'? Slapsuit sounds pretty cool, though.
