Description From left to right, Victoria 4.2, Victoria 6 (Genesis 2), Victoria 7 (G3) & Victoria 8. All rendered in Daz/Reality/Luxrender with 3Delight textures, with no playing with material's settings.

V4 is not a character per se, so had muscle morphs injected and used the Daz hi-def texture that came with the model. Personally I think the V4.2 (2008) is still looking ok.

The better lighting on Vic6 was not intentional, I did try and create 'fair' lighting.

I did a lot of comparison myself. With the base models. It is very, very difficult to find the differences. The difference between G2 and G3 was night and day......"and that's all I have to say about that", Forrest Gump.

I'm getting a little bit fed up with the 2yr release cycle, G2 content was starting to get good, then G3 appeared. G3 content is now looking good and G8 has appeared. Then with every generation you get little differences. XYZ pose won't work with XYZ generation, props only have poses for XYZ generation.

Genesis 2 is probably my favourite, though it did seem that G3 was better for the content creators.

G2 content may have been better than G3 but I like the G3 models better. I only tried G2 initially, when I started a year and a half ago. I decided to go with G3 when it was still young. I like G8, because it's the same as G3! But that's my problem, I don't need G8 because I have G3! LOL! Maybe now I can save some money to put towards upgrading my rig. Then I can buy G9 in 2 years and go back to feeding the Daz money generating machine.

I may end up skipping the G8 line. I tend to prefer the G2 line, but only as I don't render in Iray. But the G3 has had a lot of good content pushed out.

I just picked up G8, and so far it seems to have excellent backwards compatibility all the way back to Genesis. I haven't found any Genesis (or newer) props that didn't work with G8 fairly easily. There are some steps to making older stuff work... but all that amazing (decade old) V4 content works incredibly well with V8, so far as I have seen. It takes more work than just hitting 'fit to figure', but once you've done it, you can just save it that way and reuse it whenever.

I found the above worked perfectly, yes it is good that Daz included it in the G8 figure. But then you have to purchase the expressions and body morphes

true enough... but then, you've always had to buy Genesis expressions and head/body morphs separately, and they are not terribly expensive (I say that, but I haven't purchased them myself yet)!

That is partly why Daz release new figures every couple of years, I would actually prefer if I had to pay a license fee for the software every year.

Exactly right! As nice a G8/V8 is, she's not really that much better than G3/V7 On the other hand, I do like that the base software is 'free', so I can choose to buy G8 morphs or just make my own.

The thing really is, if you can create morphs, props, and textures yourself, you don't really need any of the paid products, although they are quite nice to have. It's the poor folks who can't make their own products that have to choose to pay or not have the newest nicest thing.

It's exactly like a 'free to play' game... use the base product for free, buy the good stuff.

I think Daz use the worst of the 'free to play' model, new people come along buy a few hundred dollars of props and outfits, then move on. Those that stay will often be forced to 'buy' again.

My biggest irritation with Daz is the learning curve, which with 3Delight was quite steep without understanding lighting. There are so many features of the software that the guidance/tutorials are so poor, I've not touched loads of the features and sometimes I find it counter intuiative. For example changing the viewport background colour, or deleting a pane (trying to find the menu to add the pane).

Daz is more a content shop, than software. Some of the better content/props should be baked into the software. For example better 'autofit' for older generation models. Clothing morphs, to make clothes hang more naturally etc.

Yeah, the Free To Play thing does have it's downsides... including the fact that you can "pay to win" in both cases. I've seen some really nice looking renders from people with minimal skill who simply buy dozens of sets of figures and props and use only the 'ready to render' cameras and lights. I much prefer to follow people who come up with new and inventive ways to use the old materials and find cool uses for a few figures and props they already have.

Daz Studio's functionality is so much simpler than any 3D modeling/animation program like 3Ds max or Maya or Lightwave or Blender... but it's still super complex to use, not because it needs to be, but because it's just so poorly designed. At least Daz Studio is better than Poser for clarity of interface, but any modern program like Daz or Poser really ought to be easier to use, there's so many years of usability research, there's no reason for 4 separate menus to have the same purpose with different labels, or to hide useful commands in obscure menus with no hot keys. I feel your pain there! I've been using Daz and Blender for the same amount of time, side by side, and Blender (which has the worst interface of any general purpose 3D package) is easier to use than Daz.

The content shop is literally why Daz exists. Daz was content only when Poser belonged to Metacreations, but when Smith Micro bought Poser and darn near ruined it with their first major release, the people at Daz realized that if they wanted to keep selling content, they needed a stable platform to sell to, and that meant making Studio because they couldn't rely on Smith Micro doing anything right.

If Daz really wanted to sell their programs, they'd make it easier to simulate cloth and soft bodies and import and use BVH motion files... and maybe do some automatic corrective morphs for muscles and joints (which apparently G8 does have some muscle and joint morphs).

I'm fine with 'Pay to Win', if someone buys a good quality prop set with a good light setup, then produces a good render, then thats great. Hopefully they would make something interesting out of it. I would probably work it out, as would most other people who have spent a little while with Daz. Funnily enough I only discovered the bult in uber environment light set from a 'Pay to Win' 3Delight set. Really annoyed that Daz don't highlight it to people at the start!

I'm glad you agree with me about the complexity of Daz, I've used all sorts of software, but Daz took time. I get you with cloth, part of the reason I wish they would upgrade the software. IClone for example, for animations makes cloth behave like cloth. I hardly ever render any baggy clothes as it either is shrunk wrapped to a character, and/or is really hard to pose. Until they sort that out Daz will be a still image creator, and not animation software.

Yeah, I guess I just don't like 'pay to win' systems. Mostly 'cause I'm poor. I bet I'd like them better if I had more money! Sometimes you can learn good tricks from the sets!

Daz is just crazy complex, and poorly designed. If they had the cloth sim like iClone or Marvelous Designer the clothing would work so much better!
