Description
Entry for a contest held by eorhythm /Xenoterrestrial for a rehash of her Drii creature concept. As usual I did not do what was asked. I'm subversive like that!__________
You can call him Shaggy and he'll run over to you knock you down and rub himself all over you.
You honestly don't expect to be licked, do you?
Show any semblance of fear and he'll tear out a chunk from you with a quickness.
Wait...!
Don't run!!
*Watches pathetically as the fleeing person is teared to pieces*
* * *
Rustlemaw is a generic name for a number of closely related species of Driiaican predatory fauna. There are species which form packs and hunt socially. Others are solitary. They are characterized by an extremely mimetic integument (Remember the drii lineage's integument is a living one. So for your own sake don't pull on the fur) which can change color instanly.
The Drii have selectively bred a few of these species together to yield something one could call a "dog" in drii terms.
___________
EDIT: I had a disagreement with ol' Shaggy here over his sorry noisy and poor-framed state. Good thing he's just layers of graphite on a flat cellulose sheet!

Scary yet cute XD I'm not sure I'd want it as a pet though. Wonder if it would be friendly or violent in real life

If you'd be friendly to it, it'll be friendly to you but if you'd cross it that would be that last time you'd do it

Ahh! Shocked me once it popped up @_@ wasnt expecting that from the thumbnail..
With my apperent fears aside, amazing textures. Feels very soft and comforting, yet very straightforward and evil.
Kinda looks like a crossbread of a spider and a wolf @_@ ahh...

imagination is a wonderful thing
sounds like something youd see in a d&d monster guide
awesome picture, is that pencil then?

Thanks
Yes, indeed
It is a pencil drawing, done during a weekend I made myself sit down and brewed enough patience.
Coincidentaly, since you mention D&D, I've been thinking for some time I should submit some of my drawings to WotC. Do you think I got any chance them saying I should continue sending them?

there is a good possibility, you have a very good sense of imagination and the beast looks great, i think you should at least give it a try!

o_o ...wow.
That is one funky creation of your mind.
I loooove, the detail in the fur, and ...well, just in general. Hair and fur is something I have trouble with, so there's a huge amount of awe and respect on my part towards people that can draw it so realistically (there's also hate and revenge plotting, but we won't go there.) He actually looks quite cute and cuddly, but from your comment, I know better, otherwise I would've just gone and stroked him and been ravaged. >>;
I like his feet, I think they look like flower petals and that makes them pretty. Also, the two little eyes? I think that's what they are, they look adorable. ^_^

Thanks I think the best revenge would be excelling at texturing fur
And I have to say, after perusing my gallery to be sure, that this was one of my first serious attempt at realistic fur and I still have ways to go by my reconning. But I'm gladly surprised by the effect it had
I'm also a bit surprised at the diversity of reactions I've received specially the "How cute" ones but, yes, I guess the Drii would have to find the creature adorable no?

Freakishly detailed! I love the face and paired eyes. The mouth does seem to fit "rustlemaw".
Great description, and wonderfully rendered creature concept.
Are the hind legs supposed to be that small?
And what is going on with the toes? Are those claws or function as whiskers / sensory organs?

Thanks, and that's with a horrid resizing on top
Yes, the hind legs are supposed to be that small. Though at some point I also thought they were a tad too small I now ascribe it to perspective, though somehow I think you've been mislead by the high shoulders. That's just the mane of hair puffing up in anger
Those are four claws for each toe. I decided that a fractal design for the limbs would be interesting.

Nice explanation, and I also like the detailed description. You get technical in places; I like how you have thought the creature through.
I wouldn't want those toes anywhere near my flesh!

Thanks very muchly
Well I can say that was perhaps the best compliment I received ever the above comments notwithstanding.
And one can say that scaring was my intention as I want a rustlemaw to be a very no-nonsense creature

Out of the deviations you showed me, and the ones in your gallery this one really stood out the most - i really like the creative edge with this, its such a strange combination of different animals and its superbly drawn - great work.

dracontes In reply to nemo-ramjet [2005-10-27 09:49:43 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the favourite
Good thing you ask that because I totally forgot to explain it
Erm...
The mouth parts are small derived versions of the locomotory limbs hence the recurring pattern of a shaft divided in three parts and then deriving into four small versions. The basal segment has muscular foramina and attachment processes, the following two have "teeth". One can imagine a funky chewing action
From the last one of these segments, sprout the sensory strobilate tentacles (I intend them to look at least a bit like fir cones). These gather the chemosensory capabilities of tetrapod tongue and nose.
A bucal marsupium covers the main shaft keeping the "teeth" moist and sliding. It's ocasionally pulled to its full extent to clean the sensory tentacles. In this image the marsupium is pulled back because I like to think it conveys a threat posture.
And, yes, the sensory tentacles stay out most of the time so I'd guess they'd have a film of a non volatile solvent mixture similar in properties to what some carnivorous plants have. Or to take the fir cone analogy further, cover it with an array of lozenge-shaped scales.

I admire the detail you've put into the anatomy, and evolution of the appandages. The plan is such that it immediately brings many other possibilities to mind, (things with wings growing out of their mouths!)
I faved it withouht a thought because the creature resembles geckos and salticid (jumping) spiders, two kinds of animals that I love! Just for creepiness, do the conical mouthparts also produce a rattling sound?

dracontes In reply to nemo-ramjet [2005-10-28 13:56:10 +0000 UTC]
Thank you
As display structures, yes, as I tend to think the drii lineage isn't prone to violent intraspecific conflicts because they risk the tentacles enough tackling down prey to go and have a face to face fight. Though it wouldn't be uncommon for rustlemaws to have a few severed tentacles from hunting. Good thing for biological redundancy To fly I'm a bit more conservative tough the living integument thing does give some interesting ideas.
Funny thing because I was only thinking of a dog analogue. I see the salticid resemblance but where's the gecko? The feet?
If I go for the scale covering they would but _for them_ creepy would be the change of color and the droning electromagnetic pulses the pissed-off rustlemaw would produce. The mechanoreceptor senses are situated on the same structures as the electrosensory so that tends to muddle the difference.
