Description Entry for a contest held by eorhythm /Xenoterrestrial for a rehash of her Drii creature concept. As usual I did not do what was asked. I'm subversive like that!
__________

You can call him Shaggy and he'll run over to you knock you down and rub himself all over you.
You honestly don't expect to be licked, do you?
Show any semblance of fear and he'll tear out a chunk from you with a quickness.

Wait...!
Don't run!!
*Watches pathetically as the fleeing person is teared to pieces*

* * *

Rustlemaw is a generic name for a number of closely related species of Driiaican predatory fauna. There are species which form packs and hunt socially. Others are solitary. They are characterized by an extremely mimetic integument (Remember the drii lineage's integument is a living one. So for your own sake don't pull on the fur) which can change color instanly.
The Drii have selectively bred a few of these species together to yield something one could call a "dog" in drii terms.
___________

EDIT: I had a disagreement with ol' Shaggy here over his sorry noisy and poor-framed state. Good thing he's just layers of graphite on a flat cellulose sheet!

I really like this. How long did it took you to do all that fur?

Much obliged for the compliment and the truckload of favourites Β

As for how long I took to do this, since it was done more than 8 years ago, I hope you'll understand that I can't be more precise than a faint recollection of 8+ hours (which I may be confusing with that of some other work of mine in the same vein).Β

I was already interested in reading works by Niven. Now I'm even more resolved if it's only to understand what you're going on about.

Domesticated for surrogate womb use if I remember correctly? I'd think they'd eradicate them before that

Yeah, I can see the passing similarity

'Twas good watching from what I murkily remember ten years ago though it stinks a bit of Jurassic Park in its underlying message. Cautionary stories aren't really my thing

Truth be told, this is a contest entry to redesign a previous installment of one of ~Xenoterrestrial 's creature concepts. But I did strive for a good original concept within the bounds of what she asked.

From what I remember of the concept, the species range in size from house cat to leopard. Since Shaggy here is a domestic fertile hybrid and used to guard property and livestock, I'd surmise he's at the larger end of the spectrum and then some. Not to be triffled with, I'm afraid

oh nice thought for anatomy to be a imagined animal! Really scary also. The fur is really well done and the shading too, it's very hard to do it on fur
Pose seems perfect. Great job my friend!

dracontes In reply to pandracchio [2006-11-23 15:42:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Actually I find shading more easily done on fur; scales usually bum me out. It seems a bit stiff-legged to me at times but since it's trying to look larger than it really is one would expect it to be so.

pandracchio In reply to dracontes [2006-11-23 19:58:44 +0000 UTC]
