Description
I hope this helps illustrate one of the ways to get animations to look smoother~of course, adding more frames between things is only one part of it, things have to be eased properly, arcs have to be done right, etc.
Cycles are the easiest to in-between because everything is likely to be spaced evenly, it depends if you wanna emphasize some parts to add character to it, but basic mechanical run or walk cycles are pretty equal on how the keys are spaced out

I dipped into animation a bit in the past but i never was all that great at it.
You did a great job on this.

I wouldn't mind getting back into animation and i think I'm ok at it. However i just haven't had the free time to do it. I do intent do it in the distant future. Though it can be quite time consuming and it was clear to me after i created a action animation that took a month, that making fight scenes were a challenge. It's quite understandable why people animate in teams, where they can split the work load with multiple people.
Also the manner i did animation was definitely different. I was drawing the movements on ms paint. one movement at a time, bit by bit. Id color the black line grey so i could use it for the next movement. And after i did all the movements to the scene, i would bring it to life with movie maker. It's the most efficient manner to do this obviously but, I never had a animation program of any kind. So i never professionally animated anything. i just improvised with the limited tools that i had at the time and it worked surprisingly.
The best animation programs tend to cast money and a good portion of my childhood i never had enough to buy a project like that.
I could definitely tell some unique stories I'll tell you that.

hhhh like my old mentor told me and like I find myself repeating; 'software' don't mean shit. You can make an animation using post it notes. you can claymate. stop motion, whatever. if you're specifically talking about 2D animation, there are free ways around it. If you're used to doing things in MS paint, which to my knowledge, works by bold, solid pixel line brushes, then download GIMP. My buddy uses it, and i use it. You can make some pretty decent stuff with it, and it's FREE. also, if you're like me and prefer a more traditional approach, you can draw your animations on paper, and scan them, then compile to a PNG framestack in whatever video software you have. I tend to use photoshop, just because it has a pretty straightforward PNG to GIF system, and I'm all about the GIF's.
but really, who gives a shit what you work with? if your fundamentals are solid and the animation is good, then whoever's watching won't give a fuck what you used...which really annoys me when every animation on deviantart has like 50 comments saying "oh cool! what program did you use?"
If you like using MS Paint, then fucking use it. If you don't like it, switch to something else.
I use GIMP. that's not an animation program.
I use Photoshop. that's not an animation program.
I only use something like Aftereffects if I'm working with multiple layers of animation that need to be moved around that I can't do in Photoshop, or if I need to put some flashy effect over the animation to hide a mistake i made.

Yeah, Ms pain isn't preferred and it has a lot of limitations but if you don't have any other option it's a acceptable substitute. I would actually love to do claymation. It's a time consuming process, I'm actually going to look into that later. stop motion is also really cool. I need to look into these things more often. I actually have Gimp already. I didn't have it in the past when i was animating stuff but i do now. I might try it out for animation purposes. Didn't think of doing that, i haven't animated in years but if i get some free time, i might get back into animation. So Photoshop is a good program to use? I'll keep that in mind.
Yes your right it don't matter as long as the results look good. The only reason i would ask the person what program they used, is so i can know all the different options i could use. So i know what the program is called. It's for knowledge purposes for me, if i happen to ask. I Like having that insight, it's quite helpful.
On more question. Does Aftereffects cost any money?

uhhh yeah, AfterEffects costs a fuckload of money
it's like 70$ a month. Adobe has this stupid subscription-type thing now, that's why a lot of painters use Photoshop CS6, because it's the last verion that you can keep without paying a monthly. I use CC 2015

70$? Well damn.. That's pricey.. I guess I'll stick to whatever stuff i have, and maybe upgrade in the distant future when it's easier to manage and pay for. Thanks for the insight. this was quite interesting.
