Description "This looks like a job for Superman!"

First appearance year: 1938
Created by: Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster

The Man of Steel. The Man of Tomorrow. The Last Son of Krypton. The Big Blue Boyscout. The Metropolis Marvel.

One of the most famous DC heroes and fictional characters of all time, and perhaps the most renowned superhero ever- SUPERMAN!

Ask one person you pass by on the street to name a DC superhero, and Superman is the most likely name they will come up first. Bearing one of the most iconic symbols in popular culture on his costume, Superman's symbol is just as well-known as the man himself.

First appearing in Action Comics #1 in June of 1938 (which is also the most valuable comic book issue in the world), Superman pretty much started the Golden Age of Comic Books, and especially the superhero genre.

While not quite the first superhero, Superman set the standards and conventions that other superheroes after him would commonly follow, including a codename, a bright and colorful costume, extraordinary abilities, and an altruistic mission. And while he also wasn't the first hero with a secret identity, he nevertheless influenced that trope as well.

Fun Fact: At the time of Superman's first publication in the late 1930s, DC Comics was known then as National Allied Comics

Now more about Superman. Even those who don't read comic books know a lot about his character and life. His adopted civilian name is Clark Kent, though his birth name from his home planet of Krypton is Kal-El

As a Kryptonian, young Kal-El's home planet was a technologically and scientifically advanced world, and the Kryptonians had one of the most powerful governments and cultures ever. However, by the time of Kal-El's infancy, his father Jor-El, who was a renowned scientist, discovered that Krypton was going to explode in a natural cataclysm. (The exact cause varies according to the different media continuities, but one common cause is because of the planet's red sun, which pulls the planet in and causes it's inner core to become unstable.)

Because space travel was not sufficiently advanced enough for the Kryptonians to escape the destruction, Jor-El sent his baby son in a spaceship of his own design, to a nearby habitable plant which happened to be Earth.

Now a resident of Earth, the adult Superman vows to protect his new home world and the ones closest to him. As Clark Kent, he takes a job as a newspaper reporter in order to aid in his heroic duties when he's Superman.

Powers and abilities

Superman's powers and abilities are almost as famous as he is. His abilities have varied over the years and also depends on the publication or media depictions, but I will list the common and consistent powers that he is shown to have.

His biggest physical powers include vast superhuman strength, durability, almost limitless stamina, super-speed, and near-invulnerability. Superman is also known for his ability of flight, which he often combines with his tremendous speed when in the air.

His other abilities include X-ray vision, super hearing, heat vision, freezing breath, and in many other versions, enhanced intelligence.

With these powers, and his sense of justice and morality instilled in him by his loving adoptive parents, there's a reason he is called "Superman".

However, the biggest power of Superman is not his powers, or even his cool costume. It it his empathy, which makes him someone you can look up to and strive to be. Superman inspires each and every one of us to be our best selves, and also to strive to make the world a better place with truth and justice He is a figure that all of humanity can look to for inspiration.

IGN ranks Superman as the number 1 superhero on their "Top 100 Comic Book Heroes" list. And that is more than earned for a figure like Superman.

Superman belongs to DC.
