Description
Task 2 for Profile
My lovely Illusionist, Lady Sorceress Iolanthe Teriae. Her name is pronounced Eye-Oh-Lan-They Teh-ree-ay
Iolanthe is a feminine given name, derived from the Greek "ιολη" (iole) for "violet" and "ανθος" (anthos) for "flower".
It is also the title of a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iolanthe
And yeah . . . she doesn't wear undies. Long hair censoring for the win!
The three words that describe her personality are - Loyal, Vain, Confident
Here are the stats for her -
Name: Lady Sorceress Iolanthe Teriae
Age: Early 60's (she can keep herself looking as young as she wants with her illusions)
Ht: 5' 9" (1.75m)
Wt: I'm not asking . . .
Hair: Red
Eyes: Dark blue
Body type: tall, curvy
Occupation: Sorceress/illusionist
Likes: dressing formally, castle life, being waited upon, being young and beautiful, society, being the center of attention, flirting
Hates: being alone, people knowing how old she is (you're all in trouble now), people who don't give her the attention she thinks she deserves
Iolanthe was born to a noble family of high status, but her magic abilities were discovered very early on and she was sent to High Forest Magic School to learn how to use her powers. When she was 15 she was sent to Kentrell-by-the-Bend to be further tutored by Queen Sorceress Eriantielle, since Eriantielle was the most powerful Sorceress the school had produced. The Head Wizard of the school thought that Iolanthe would benefit from having a female mentor (the school had no Sorceress' other than Iolanthe at the time she was being taught).
She was first a good student and then a great friend of Queen Sorceress Eriantielle, both of them enjoying having another Sorceress to talk to (she and the queen became dreadful gossips, much to the embarrassment of the king).
Iolanthe also held a great regard for King Raghnall, admiring him from afar and hoping that she would be so lucky as to snag a royal husband the way Eriantielle had.
Her unusual hair color is attributed to her illusion abilities, since there is no one else who has hair as brilliantly red as Iolanthe's. She enjoys the fact that it makes her distinct. Her magic is blue, matching her eyes.
When Iolanthe was 25, Gaetan, cousin to King Raghnall, took over the throne after Raghnall and Eriantielle were reportedly killed by assassins from a neighboring country. Lord Wizard-Healer Tiernan and Iolanthe were accused of conspiring with the assassins and had to flee the kingdom to avoid being executed. That was the official story, here is the real story as told by Tiernan -
Tiernan's Version (SPOILERS!)My name is Tiernan Crouthe. I am a Wizard-Healer. I was the King’s Own Wizard for King Raghnall of Kentrell-by-the-Bend. I may be a criminal, but I am not a murderer or even an assassin.
My name and the name of Lady Sorceress Iolanthe Teriae have been maligned by the High King, Gaetan. We are both in hiding and intend to stay that way until our deaths or the overthrow of Gaetan, whichever comes first.
I write this missive to clear our names and to reveal the true criminals responsible for the deaths of our beloved King and Queen. May it come into the hands of those who can use the knowledge I impart to raise a force of rebellion against the self-styled High King.
I first wish to make clear that there is no reasoning for my being branded the murderer of my two greatest friends. Queen Eriantielle was both a friend and classmate of mine from the High Forest Magic School (a place that I have heard recently has been burnt to the ground and whose teachers and pupils have been hun
That dagger you've seen her holding is her wand. It's something that most of the mages in my world have. It is part of their final test as a mage to make a wand they can use to assist them with their magic and as a place to store their power when needed, made of metal because it is a fantastic conductor of magic. There are three reasons for the stiletto like blade of the wand: 1) The sharp point helps in aiming the spells, 2) Certain spells require the caster's own blood, 3) It can be used as an emergency defense in the event that the mage is out of power. Wands are usually very ornate as well as being functional, every one unique as their creator/bearer. Wands are so tied to their creator that they can only be used by the one who made it. The gems help with magical storage and are large and polished smooth. Facets tend to make magic go all over the place and are not desired on wand gems (or any magical item with gems for that matter). I'll provide a close up of the wand for the wardrobe task.
If you've made it to the end of this, I have another treat for you. Go back to the "Guess Who" picture
, I've added a little bit of writing to the artist's comment on there to let you know exactly what is going on

Actually the first part is like the moon of Jupiter (at least in my head) Io=Eye-Oh. The rest is right though
When I first heard it pronounced with a Y at the beginning I was surprised, but I've heard it so many ways on the internet that I just picked the one I liked the best. There's no instance of I=Y anywhere in my world and I try to keep pronunciation consistent within those confines.

Very interesting! I love the fact that her hair is that color because of her illusions, what a way to keep your roots colored! No redyeing! XD I actually thought that the dagger was a wand, but did not realize that it was also a dagger. XD
I lover her backstory, very interesting. She seems like someone who, despite her pride, would be quite the attractive personality!

If only real life were that easy (I hate keeping my roots colored) Funniest part is that I'm not sure what her real hair color is . . .whether it's a more natural red normally or plain brown
I really wanted the wands to be multi-purpose so that's why they got that kind of design
Thank you! She is a very charming person in most cases, but she does eventually go a bit odd after being alone for as long as she ends up alone

The world-building and dynamics of Iolanthe's world is well-developed, enchanting (no pun intended) and sort of evokes the elegance of Wynn-Jones works at times, albeit this appears to be more or less fantasy late Renaissance setting.
Iolanthe herself is most charming (again, no pun intended)- she has this knowing look, almost evocative of a wise fox deity of sorts. Her beauty has an approachability and natural quality, even if she does maintain her looks through means of magic.
I certainly LOVE the story and background concerning Iolanthe and her progress into her mage profession, as well as the royal connections and escapades she and Tiernan are in because of the reported assassination.
Both King Raghnall and Sorceress Queen Eriantielle appear to be fantastically kind and generous people. It would be great to see more of Iolanthe and Eriantiell's friendship shown here. It's also humorous how the two become such great gossips! Are Iolanthe and Eriantielle close in age or further apart? Somehow, I sense the Queen is older?
It is sad about the assassination- but you mentioned it was reportedly- can we expect an unexpected twist in the plot?
Do Iolanthe and Tiernan become pardoned and re-stationed in their positions?
Iolanthe's powers are fascinating- the structure of how mages use their magic through their wands is interesting- esp using non-faceted gems for focus and having the wands acting as daggers as well.
Also, last but not least, Iolanthe's red hair is gorgeous- it definitely denotes her magic abilities and enchanting beauty.

Thank you! Let's see if I can answer your questions
Eriantielle and Raghnall are older than Iolanthe Tiernan is too, but he's younger than Eriantielle and Raghnall. If you're curious about them (and younger Tiernan and Gaetan) I did write how they met -
Raghnall Meets Eriantielle - Part 1Prince Raghnall stood impatiently next to his father, King Domnall, as the presentations continued. Gods, this is boring, he thought to himself as he glanced toward his cousin Gaetan, who was deep in conversation with one of the Lords. Raghnall narrowed his eyes as he remembered the last conversation he’d had with Gaetan.
“If you can’t shoulder the duties of Heir, perhaps you don’t deserve the title.”
The recall of Gaetan’s words made him want to growl. Those types of off handed remarks had been becoming more and more common from his Royal Uncle King Paedar’s oldest bastard. Raghnall wondered if that wasn’t the reason that Domnall had agreed to take Gaetan for his court in the first place.
Raghnall tried to keep himself from scowling as the next young lady was presented to his father. Leave it to King Domnall to play politics with his own son; hanging a threat of being disowned if he didn’t comp
The reason it says reportedly is that the story was that they were assassinated by people from another kingdom. They were actually killed by Gaetan Neither Iolanthe nor Tiernan are pardoned while they're alive

Ah, see, the conspirators wanted the two of them out of the way so it was the best way to do it and make it legitimate to kill them. Accuse them of killing the King and Queen and the new King has a reason to get rid of the two people who know the truth while still keeping up the appearance of being a ruler who wants to avenge the deaths of the previous monarchs. Of course, they didn't think that Tiernan and Iolanthe would be able to escape

Oh my, very cozy in her body in general to be cool with just having her hair cover her. How strong are her illusions? Are there ever times where her concentration breaks for her appearance? The thing with the blade wand is pretty cool!

dragondoodle In reply to WafflenutOfKitties [2018-02-14 19:12:22 +0000 UTC]
Definitely comfortable with her own body
She's very strong, it would take a lot to break her concentration. Before the Gods gave her the ability to hold her illusions even when she was asleep they could be broken when she slept or lost consciousness. I imagine that now the only thing that could break her concentration would be getting really drunk or having to cast a lot of other spells while holding up an illusion.
Thank you regarding the wand!

Her hair is wonderful! I like how her expressions each have a different hairstyle - befitting of a woman who cares about her youth and age image conveying grace and beauty!
I hope her loneliness doesn't scar her too much, in the end :')
That being said, what kind of material is her wand-blade made of? (Or should I wait for that answer until the next task? ^^ I wonder if and how different metals would influence the power of the blade! )

dragondoodle In reply to MegaMaeve [2018-02-14 16:09:38 +0000 UTC]
Yep She keeps me hopping with coming up with hairstyles
Her loneliness does effect her in an unfortunate way, I will admit that.
I've always imagined it as being some sort of steel alloy with gold or silver decor to help with the magical storage (gold and silver are the best magical conductors, but they're too soft to make the blade), the colors on the metal hand guard being a result of magical tempering. There's a whole section of mages who are experts in magical forging, although all of them know a enough to make their own wands. The only metal that is useless to mages is aluminum, that particular metal actually absorbs magic like a sponge (it's quite rare in their world as well, unlike ours). There was one mage who used aluminum as a component of a sword and managed to create a sword that made the bearer basically spell proof This little tidbit came up when I did an AU of one of my mages coming to a modern world. Hilarious result of the aluminum discovery was people carrying shields made of aluminum turkey pans in order to fight an evil mage.

Those hairstyles all do look wonderful on her, considering you put some of them in her Wardrobe task!
I'm curious to learn more about her character development, and I hope that she won't be too broken over her isolation, and that maybe, she can even learn from it :') (...silver linings, silver linings...)
Thank you for the explanation on her dagger, too! It really is interesting, and it's great you put such thought into it; it's always fun to read some logical world building that makes sense - and the technicalities of 'magical tools' is nothing short of fascinating! Did Iolanthe make her dagger-wand herself, or did an expert crafter make it for her? ^^ I know this is a belated realization, but I just realized that this dagger/wand combination also is cleverly used in the name of your group 'Wand & Sword' XD
Aluminium is able to absorb magic? (Does it store the magic it absorbed, too?) I bet that must be an inconvenience to mages who have to deal with this spell-absorbing sword - and I bet it'd be even worse if someone ever crafted a completely aluminum-based plate armor...! (Is that even possible? XD)
This AU must've been rather interesting, too!
