Description She grumbled to herself as she heard the constant howling and blubbering of the young cubs. If it wasn't the baby crying it was the other one whining and complaining. She never wanted cubs. She hated cubs, but they didn't deserve to die either. When she saw them lost and abandoned she really had no choice. But now, she was beginning to regret her decision. Their constant noises hurt her ears and she'd just about had enough.

"Mum! She's hurting me again!" screeched to youngest cub as she howled in Akila's ear.
"Shut up! and stop calling me mum. I'm not your mother." She spun on the cubs and they both immediately cowered at her paws. The pathetic sniveling little babies began to cry and howl begging to go home. She let out a sigh and lay down in front of them, her large paws resting in front of the cubs.
"You can't go home now cubs. Your parents died ok. You remember those big bad lions did that, but... I can find you another home if you want..." the cubs ears perked up at the thought of a mummy and a daddy and in joy they leaped at her face and crawled all over her.
"Get off me you little toads!" she growled as one of them chewed lovingly on her ear.

It'd been nearly a month and she'd found a decent enough pride to take on the cubs. They'd put on a lot more weight, although they still weren't looking like the average happy healthy cubs Akila had known children to be. She'd lived on this pride's border for the past few days scoping them out, when she finally confronted them, they seemed skeptical at first but one of the females had lost her cubs to a roaming badger and she'd eagerly wanted to replace them. Akila hadn't seemed too sure of herself, she'd come to know the cubs and after a month of being with them, she didn't want them to go to just anybody. But she knew she'd never be able to raise them. Her mother hadn't been the best with her, how could she raise cubs herself. Besides. She hated cubs.
As she said her final goodbyes the youngest cub clung to her face and cried,
"Can't we just stay with you mumma 'Kila?" she begged as Akila felt her hot little tears on her fur. She felt a pang of guilt, but knew it were best for the cubs.
"No, and don't call me mum. I'm not your mother." She turned and left as quickly as she could. Although the cubs were welcomed to the pride, she however, was still classed as a threat and the new mother would not hesitate to attack her as soon as her back was turned. However something still didn't sit right with Akila, maybe she missed the cubs after all, but nonetheless she stayed on the border for the next few days.

Her fears were realised when she saw the cubs being put to work helping to build up the den. They were still babies, but being forced to carry and shift heavy boulders to clear out the new area. When the young 'crybaby' slipped and hurt her paw their new mother viciously attacked her, beating her until she curled into a sobbing ball. Akila leaped into the territory and attacked the female infront of the pride. She'd nearly ripped the fur clean off her face before the lead males had stepped in to attack the attacker. Her tail was broken and chewed nearly in half as she tried to fight off the males, but soon enough the rest of the pride had shown up to help destroy the 'evil' lioness rogue. Before she could think she picked up the wounded cub and kicked the other cub into a run as they fled from the pride. They stopped long enough from the chasers for the other young cub to climb on her back. She ran as hard and fast as she'd ever gone. Her heart pounding, her lungs fit to burst and burn, but she didn't stop. She ran through the night and most of the next day until she knew she was far far enough from the pride. There she set the cubs down and took on their condition. The youngest had a broken paw, but her limp didn't slow her down. They hid in a mountain cave for five days as Akila collapsed in exhaustion. She barely managed to get up each day to drink without passing out. The oldest cub set to work guarding the cave and making sure no others were coming near and thankfully none did. Both cubs hunted for rodents and birds and brought most of their kill to Akila.
"Mummy wake up...." the youngest cub whispered as she curled in close to her face, leaving a large rat by her jaws. Akila's eyes slowly opened as she saw the food. These little meals, though not enough to survive, had helped her gain back her strength. She pulled in the cubs closer with her giant paws and cradled them.
"Thank you my children..." she whispered lovingly in their fur. They were thrilled at the prospect of having a mother, as mean as she was, she did love them. And forever she'd love them as she watched her cubs grow into beautiful young adults.
