Description
The pictures are more or less self explaining. For this first steps you'll need:
Clay
Alginate
Fitting Dish
Dihydrogen-monoxide
Gypsum
Putty knife
Modeling tools
And for the finishing:
Air hardening clay
Fine emery paper
Pen
Drills
Clear varnish
Paint
Infos:
I used for the alginate-mixture 100g alginate powder and 400g dihydrogen-monoxide.
That means 1 part alginate and 4 parts water.
The gypsum i used is a quick solidifying gypsum. Its solid after 20 minutes.
Notes:
Use the remaining alginate and gypsum to see how solid they dried. Don't rush and be patient.
(13)Use the same orientation of the clay-dial when you put it onto the gypsum. -Upside down and the end of the spiral to the same side. Otherwise the spiral patterns will not fit together. If the gypsum is to liquid the clay could sink to deep into the gypsum. Wait till its firm enough and then put the clay spiral on it.
Try and error if necessary.
Make more gypsum copies. You will appreciate one or two backup pieces if something goes wrong.
(17)Before the gypsum is completely dried, softly carve the backside with a tool to make the backside roughly finished. The firm but still wet gypsum is easier to carve but be careful. Its easy to carve and easy to destroy too.
The gypsum is fully dried when the surface don't feel cold.
You will maybe see some air bubbles in the gypsum. Thats not a problem. You can fill those bubble holes with air hardening clay after the gypsum is fully dried.
When the air hardening clay is dried, finish the surface with fine emery paper, mark the holes with a pen till the hole pattern fits to the original.
Try and error if necessary.
Drill the holes carefully. First use a small drill and then a bigger one. If something goes wrong while drilling: Don't panic. Use air hardening clay or a small amount of gypsum to fill the mess. Let it dry and drill again.
Colors: Don't paint it complete at once, it will stick on the surface.Paint it half, let it dry, paint the rest.
Gypsum is really thirsty. Cover it first with clear varnish and let it dry (you will notice the color change). Add black color in the holes. Then paint it with the typical color of a impact dial. Use a clear varnish to finish the piece.
For a special effect Impact-Dial: Drill the holes deep into the piece. Design the inside fitting to the holes and make enough free space for incense material attached to a fireproof backplate. Paint only the outside.
