Description Beatdown has been one of my weaker designs for a while, so I figured it was time to update him. To be fair, that's partially because he's the first person in my universe to have started publicly operating as a super hero and I wanted to give him a look that made it seem as though his costume was designed in a time before the super hero look had really been figured out.

I still want that to be the case, so I'm not really getting rid of the old costume. Instead, I'm making that his "original costume" from back before he joined the Gavel. This is the new costume that he gets when he joins the team.

It's looking good, but I feel the midriff is too empty. It doesn't need anything huge, just a little something, like maybe have his belt more visible on top his shirt. Besides, what kind of soldier doesn't tuck in their shirt? Or maybe just have his abs more visible or show that he has some kind of armor underneath.

I feel you are both right on some accounts. While the midriff is barren, it tends to leave focus to other areas. As for the untucked shirt, I think it is something that hasn't been debated before. It's hard to keep clothes neat when fighting, but its hasn't really been seen before because most heroes don't wear street clothes. They wear flexible bodysuits. Here I think it works to have the shirt untucked. For practicality reasons.

I've always felt that superhero outfits in general emphasize appearance over practicality. Practicality is a part of it, but the generally it's more important to make an outfit look good over having it make sense.

We might have to get a third opinion on this, because I really think that the plain midriff helps balance out the design. I left it that way on purpose in order to balance out the busyness of the camo. I'm a big believer in the idea that even the busiest designs need somewhere your eye can go when it needs a rest (e.g. Clockspinner's arms or Sol's hips). That way it's not too overwhelming.

As for having the shirt tucked into the belt, it was like that in the first design, but I kept feeling like that might be a royal pain in the ass for a martial artist, so I just decided that he stopped tucking his shirt in after he left the army.

Well I mean you shouldn't get rid of it, it's just that in this particular image it looks so empty. I look at it and the art part of my brain just goes "there should be something there".

Now THIS is a great look for Beatdown! Tactical with a hint of Superhero! Also, love the Emblem!

By the way, would you mind weighing in on the disagreement that DaErkka and I are having in this comment section? I don't care which one of us is right, I just want to make sure my characters are as good as they can possibly be.
