Description
In an alternate timeline, the USS Enterprise survived the Battle of Veridian III and although badly damaged, was able to return to Earth for repairs and upgrades.
Among the upgrades were the replacement of the warp core, replacement of the existing nacelles with newer, somewhat smaller and more efficient nacelles. Weapons were upgraded with more powerful Phaser banks and Rapid fire Photon/Quantum Torpedo Launchers. Also, breaking with long standing custom, the badly damaged bridge superstructure was removed and the main bridge was relocated deep withing the saucer.
There was some debate over re-registering the Enterprise as NCC-1701-E, but it was finally decided to keep the 1701-D registry...

*NOTE* the Galaxy X refit seen in 'All Good Things' is still a number of years away, if it ever becomes reality at all.
