Description

BIG FAT WARNING NOTE:

NOT for the beginner, despite how simple this tutorial looks.

Especially if you learned drawing from mainly anime AND if you have no idea about the "general" proportions of an actual human head.

My style and formula incorporates some realism, and if you are unsure about how a realistic face should look like, that touch of realism can play havoc with the face you are constructing, sending your drawing attempt into a quick dive down the Uncanny Valley before it can scream "GERONIMO!".

Take a look at how a realistic head is proportioned first, before attempting this tutorial. A good book is the late Andrew Loomis' "Drawing the Head and Hands", which can be read online here: [link] (The specific page you are looking for is page 39/141 of the Scribd viewer, which is page 43 on the actual scanned page of the book)

Old, old, OLD tutorial. I think I made this about a year ago?

Had someone with face drawing problems, so I uploaded this for her to look at. And for others to read as well.

As you can tell from the title, this is a CONSTRUCTION tutorial, i.e. how to draw a manga-style face using basic shapes and lines, and a very set formula.

The formula is there because my friend wanted to learn how to draw a manga face that, while obviously stylized, still has semi-real proportions; a style that I enjoy using

Thanks!

At the moment, I do not have plans for making any simple tutorials such as this one. I will be releasing more comprehensive tutorials and compilations on my Patreon: www.patreon.com/dragonreine

Really helpful. I realized one thing, though.

A friend of mine introduced me to this way of drawing, although it was the 'older character' style. I kept messing up, Having one half of the face shape off.

I realize that the whole face can be ruined if you don't have a accurate circle. I guess I should work on my circle drawing, hehe.

Yes, learning to draw a fairly clean circle is always useful. If anything, it trains your hand-eye coordination.

I think I need to share this with a few friends...you've got a great point that learning from anime is all well and good, but a touch of real-life observation is definitely necessary to make a face believable. This makes it nice and clear, I think.

Welcome!

I suggest reading up on general anatomy for artists, however. The Loomis books are a good resource for drawing. The "style" is a bit outdated, but the basics of human construction are very solidly presented

Why are there so many of these on dA?

All of the anime weeaboos have already gone out and bought a "How To Draw Manga" book anyway.

Well, since the above deviant has a name like "heartlessjoy", I expect that sort of person to be at least a little bit sadistic, possibly with a complete lack of tact

However, for the sake of a friend who DOES want some instruction, it's on DA.

Whether or not it is helpful is entirely up to those who read it. I apologise if you dislike it, but there you go.

DragonReine In reply to heartlessjoy [2011-09-09 10:43:29 +0000 UTC]

The fact that there are many of these on DA is why I don't want to upload it.

I'm not a huge fan of manga but your style has some serious skill to it. Anyone who thinks knowledge of anatomy ruins the manga style should take a look at this and think again.

DragonReine In reply to thelemonpiper [2011-09-08 17:33:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Personally I consider my "comic" style to be the illegitimate child of manga and western-comicbook art. I grew up on a rather equal diet of watching/reading Sailor Moon, Doraemon, the DC universe, and the Marvel Universe. The nutty variety of influences tend to show up in my art
