As the shadow and color counterparts began their fight, punches, kicks, and headbutts were exchanged by both groups. Dark Luigi rapidly took the upper hand by kicking Luigi; Dash and Dark Dash both threw and evaded eggs; the goombas' fight was the least destructive, as they bounced from each other. Dark Mario swung his hammer and sent Mario flying backwards. Goombella quickly joined him while Dark Goombella prepared for another attack. "This blows, it's like fighting ourselves!" noticed Goombella "Hey, what's that on your butt, Mario?" Mario took a look at his overalls and saw a Fire Drive badge, as well as note, in his back pocket. 'Hmm hmm. Knowing you, you will probably rush to fight without properly preparing. Here is a gift for you. Your brother also has one. See ya. Ms. Mowz.'

"Luigi, check your back pocket!" yelled Mario at Luigi. Luigi backed from his dark self and obeyed. He found a Thunder Drive badge and equipped it. Mario did the same. Both brothers swung their hammers for an attack. A fire wave was shot from Mario's hammer and a thunderbolt was shot from Luigi's. The Dark Brothers fully received the attack and vanished into nothing, giving back the Mario Bros. their reflection on the water floor. With two opponents left, they attempted to attack Dark Goombella and Dark Dash, but their attacks simply went through them. "It looks like we can't help you with those guys." said Luigi to Goombella and Dash, who were still fighting. "Heh. No worries, I got it" responded Dash as he evaded a kick and groundpounded his shadow. Dark Dash vanished and Dash's reflection returned. Only Dark Goombella was left.

"Not fair! Only I'm missing?" whined Goombella as she attempted a headbonk. "You can do it!""Kick its butt!""Come on!" were the cheering voices she heard from her friends. A new move came to her mind. She jumped and spun in the air, when she touched the ground she went rolling and smashed her shadow with a great force. Dark Goombella disappeared and coloer was brought to the door frame they found in the room. Gray stone turned to shiny gold as the door began to open. Behind the door lied a well, and when everybody took a look, they saw the image of a nice plain in the water. Suddenly, the image got brighter and everyone disappeared.

As their eyes began to adapt to the light, they realized they were transported to the plain. It was all peaceful, until a black anthropomorphic hedgehog came running and missiles followed him. Behind him walked a red and black robot. Wide arms, armed with guns and missiles; jet boosters on its back; sharp fingers and the omega character on both its shoulders. "Must annihilate Shadow the Hedgehog. DESTROY!" was all it said before launching another barrage of explosives at the hedgehog. Shadow noticed the wounded team and cursed. He rushed toward them and yelled "Chaos Control" before warping to a safe place. "Initiate tracking mode." said E-123, codename Omega, as he began to look for the missing hedgehog.

Elsewhere, Shadow and Mario's team warped. As soon as they touched ground, Shadow collapsed from injuries and exhaustion. "What was that just now? And what is this?" asked Goombella as she began to panic. "I don't know, but we better treat him. He saved us from that robot, and besides, he looks in a bad shape." answered Mario.
