Hi, was wodering. . . how do you get it so thin without it all falling to pieces. especially the membrane.

it does take practice. but all I do is roll it out, sprinkling talc on the both sides so it doesn't stick to the rolling pin or the table, then with the sculpture in the right position for it I lay the thin layer of magic sculp across the wing armature. being very careful to support the excess so it doesn't pull it apart. I then trim off the excess, press the clay into the armature, just enough so it sticks (to much and it comes apart). and there you have it. I also do the wing membrane first so if it doesn't work I can use the clay on other parts of the sculpture. the wing membrane on this one are just as thin but more than twice as large [link] but it took 5 attempts before I got them to work. these were done separate from the body and attached later.

not as hard as stone but harder than wood and a bit lighter

do you carve it or mold it?

dragonsculptor In reply to caracalcat [2008-12-14 01:34:12 +0000 UTC]
usually in the additive before it cures and subtractive, if I haven't gotten it right, after it cures

no need to kill, all it took was paying for it, it sold for $1400
and I am always available to be commissioned for another like it. not exactly the same but similar, or even something more personal to whoever wants one

xgealicdraganx In reply to dragonsculptor [2008-09-18 03:45:34 +0000 UTC]
wow...i'll have to keep that in mind. how much do your commissions usually run?
π: 0 β©: 1
dragonsculptor In reply to xgealicdraganx [2008-09-19 04:34:43 +0000 UTC]
for the one of a kind like my dragons commissions run about the same as how they're priced. take for example "learning to fly" to commission one like that would cost $1500, if you wanted it scaled like "border guards" it would be $2500, reducing the size only reduces the price only so much. I calculate my prices based on material costs plus estimated time, "learning to fly" took about $300 in materials and 150 hours of working time, adding scales would take about 80 to 100 hours. the other texturing technique can be found on some of my latest dragon heads, that would only add about $100 to the original price. take into account it is 55 inches tall. now "border guards" is allot smaller yet not that much less, on that one the material costs are closer to $400 and then add the scales, and you can understand.
if you have any questions let me know and I'll be happy to share

AMAZING! whoa ...O.o I wish I was that good.. Don't even have the patience to finish one project..

dragonsculptor In reply to ananasje [2008-08-04 12:50:22 +0000 UTC]
thank you
yeah, I used to have the hardest time finishing pieces, I loved starting them, making something new all the time, but never seemed to finish, wold get tired of the piece if it took more than 5 days. so most of my work takes less time than that. It wasn't till I did this [link] piece in collage, over 8 weeks and I still never got to finish it. that I found the trick to being able to work longer, to having the patience to finish. I had to love the piece and had to feel the details were worth the effort.

I guess I'll survive Kepp on the good work.. And I'll try to learn some techniques and stuff by searching the internet
