Description
This one came to me this morning as I was revisiting Romans 5:8, part of the famous Romans Road collection of verses. It struck me that most people don't really appreciate the significance of what Jesus did for us, particularly in the context of "while we were yet sinners."The truth of the matter is, though we don't tend to directly experience the spiritual side of reality, our rebellion against God puts us literally in a civil war. God's righteousness compels Him to judge and deal with sin, like the grenade strike spoken of here. Yet God was so anxious not to punish us for our rebellion that He chose personally to put Himself, in the person of Christ, in the crosshairs of the death we deserved. His entire wish in so doing was that we might escape the condemnation we had earned (see Romans 6:23) by accepting the life He purchased for us with His own.
Yet even in light of that sacrifice, some people are so enamored with their own wickedness or with whatever banner they've chosen under which to rebel - be it eugenics, environmental worship, bodily autonomy, or any number of others - that even in light of this unequaled act of love, sinners will still call God unloving. They cannot detach themselves from their sin, nor allow Him to do it, and so they join their sins in the eternal fire.
