Description I REALLY enjoyed painting this. It's been a very relaxing day and I loved every minute of it. I'm really enjoying painting on a smaller scale too, being able to relax and paint and know I can finish something within a day without having to rush or worry when the next opportunity to crack open the paints will be.

Thank you to the lovely for allowing me to use her beautiful face for reference: [link]
I know this looks nothing like her original photograph, but it was the light and shadows when I first saw it that inspired me to conjour up an apparition

beautifeul! is this water color?

DragonTreasureArt In reply to simplykynd [2010-05-05 17:08:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, watercolour. I recently invested in some Winsor and Newton artists quality ones. They cost me a small fortune but the quality of the pigment is so much deeper and more vibrant. Worth every penny

It is really beautiful. What media did you use and how did you manage sparkle effects, if I may ask?

I should probably add to the description because several people asked the same question as you
I used watercolours. For the lightest areas (the dots and curves of light I applied masking fluid to the page before painting. That leaves those areas white while you paint. (The natural white of the page is always more vibrant than if you use white paint on top of colour)
Once I had painted the main areas I rubbed the masking fluid off and blended the edges. I then used small amounts of white gouache (opaque watercolour) to make the blended soft focus effect. I really like working like this. When you take the masking fluid off the edges look really rough and clumsy, but once you have blended them in you can get a really nice finish.
Hope that helps

i know this probably isn't what you had in mind, but this makes me think of those wierd mer-people in harry potter!!

Haha! Um... I'm so lame I've only seen the first Harry Potter movie but none of the others, so I'm not sure what the mer-people look like, but if they look like her they must be pretty freaky!!

yes indeedy!! (to be honest the freaky effects are the only good things about the movies!!)

I love this, its absolutely breathtaking, love the colours and the texture of the watercolour paper and just the composition is perfect and the mood as set by the face of the model/ character.

Thank you very much. I really like this colourscheme. I use a lot of blue and purple in my work so I was trying to push away from it a little. It was good fun to paint.
Thanks for the lovely comment

There was a person on another art website who used this as a painting reference as well, but I think yours is 10x better than what they did with it. It's got your own creative flair. Very cool.

Your photography is superb, I had a better look through your gallery yesterday. I may ask you if I can use another photo for reference at some point if that's okay?
Thanks again for the inspiration x
