Okay, First off, I understand math. I understand it and Acknowledge it completely. but there's some parts that make no sense. Like this, algebra in life you use math 24/7. but last time it wasn't... well.... that. GEDDIT??!I havent seen one thing in algebra yet that points out something I need in life. A teacher Of mine once said,"you need it for college." Thats believable. but what about REEAAAALL LIIIIFE??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...That is all.

"Math is the mother of all fields in science. If it starts with Math it Starts with Science"
In my opinion if anyone is gona complain about learning mathematics that they claim will never use in real life i would like to ask what will you use in real life? How are you sure of your future that you know that a situation will never prop up?
Will you ever use history to recite things that happen in your real life? Will you use any of the knowlage that you learned from your litarature teacher or Biology class? How are you sure you will.
This knowlage is mostly to prepare you until you are mature enough to choose what you will be your profession. If you work with computers or architecture or if you are political engineer you will need algebra.
90% of the stuff you will learn in highschool and collage will propably seem useless to you.Real life is chaotic through.Predicting what will come in handy in the future is one of the easiest things the brain can screw up.Everything is needed.

Real Life Examples of the Usefulness of Algebra:
Calculating income tax: income * tax rate = tax paid
Calculating interest rates: interest = principal investment * rate * time
Figuring out how much it will cost to fill up your tank of gas: (maximum amount of gas - current amount of gas) * price = cost
You can use a calculator to figure all of this out, but you're still using algebra.
If you want to talk about REALLY obscure math, I nominate n-dimensional geometry (where n>3). Trust me, I'm a physics major.

You wouldn't have any of the technology we have today without algebra.
Electronics is pretty math heavy, and so is every drawing program you have (2D and 3D).
You would be amazed if you saw the algorithms behind Photoshop.

The subtitle says "my future", so are you suggesting that everyone will make a Photoshop? The algorithms in today's (hardware at least) is actually going right the other way, simplifying everything to integer addition and in some rare cases... multiplication.
I'm studying at a University and I do understand that it is good to understand how do variables pass across the equality sign, but, seriously, it sometimes goes over the top with trig and stuff like that.

You see its not that you need Algebra in your life when you dont do something in physics or in any other math related stuff.
But well... what do you rly need from the stuff in school?! Not much.
The first thing I learned was that math isnt made to use it in your ordinary life - not directly. But Its said that math helps to envolve your intellegence so if you're good in math, most companys say "hurraay!" cause they think you are intellegent. Its simply like that and if you dont believe me - just stury math

If you want Algebra's purpose...
Algebra is used in physics to uncover the mysteries in the Big Bang. You see, algebra has a lot to do with the laws of the Universe, surprisingly. For example, we all know the famous E = mc2, which is Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. It's a little genius formula that tells us how much energy we can get for 1 gram of matter. Neat huh? :3
There's also the formula for Gravity, which is essentially this: [link]
So Algebra is basically a form of mathematics that helps greatly to express certain types of force or phenomenon in the scientific community. If you can't use Algebra, you cannot be a scientist. And, to my understanding, computers use highly advanced algebra. But I'm not going into that, I'm not an expert in the field.
Sure, it was a funny poster but I know too much about algebra to find it that funny. And, kindly remember, even though you don't want to be a scientist or computer programmer (I presume), you're not the only person in that room and some people may want and need this for a future career. That's it basically o.o

Hey, I disagree. Stuff like algebra is extremely important in real life (I really mean calculus, because algebra is a joke till you reach group theory). If all you are going to do in life is work at a supermarket than I guess what I am saying does not apply, but, to do anything else you need higher math, How many people here work with curves in vector graphics? if the curves are based on bezier frames do you know you cannot make a circle with them (why? ... it has to do with algebra and trigonometry)? If you want to invest money you need to work with a probability distribution to figure out what the best choices are. Finally if you want to look at some event over time you need calculus. This is something that is done every day unless you are a janitor or a supermarket clerk. Sorry for the rant but, I am a math grad student and I find it sad when people think it is not important to learn how to think.

I like that one but you should have used some more useless algebra...
those are simple funktions...
I think you have a mobile phone and what do you think mobile phones do? They solve those so you can hear what the person who called you wants to tell you
And even if you don't do anything technical you need this for calculate the maximum gain corporation (economy), calculatin polulation growth (biologie), check if a house will fail, etc...
You see you can do sooo many things with it because those are basics...

Algebra is all about finding unknown numbers, or how other numbers will be affected if you change a number. Mostly to build formulas so you even have an arithmetic problem to solve. You actually use algebra every time you create an arithmetic problem, you just don't realize it. So to find out, without counting, how many apples will be left after you eat 2 of 5, you already know that to find that number you just subtract 2 from 5, but you only know that because of algebra, because without algebra you wouldn't have the formula x-y=z. So you used algebra when you created the problem 5-2 and solved it for 3.
As to how you will use the algebra you didn't learn in arithmetic? You'll use it to predict the outcome of a chemical reaction in chemistry. What an object will do when it collides with other objects in physics. How much money you'll make/pay on interest. How much a chair's design will be able to support before it is even built. In short you'll use it in any job that you use a science in, except you'll have numbers to replace most of the variables with. Algebra 1 you'll use in banking, economics, early physics and chemistry. Algebra 2, advanced physics like Nuclear Physics, advanced chemistry, and the like. So 1 is pretty useful, 2 not so much, unless you're planning on becoming a mad scientist!
I hope I cleared up the, "Why on earth, do I need this stuff!" feeling. If I just made you more confused, I apologize.

The same kind of people who need to cure superviruses and track hurricanes and create alternative fuels and put rovers on Mars sure need it. As a chemical engineer, I will need it. It's very, very necessary for many jobs that require precision. Even your grocer needs it to manage their income and expenses. This is only to name a very, very few of the roles algebra plays.
Also: algebra is child's play compared to calculus. That's the really tough math.
