Okay, First off, I understand math. I understand it and Acknowledge it completely. but there's some parts that make no sense. Like this, algebra in life you use math 24/7. but last time it wasn't... well.... that. GEDDIT??!I havent seen one thing in algebra yet that points out something I need in life. A teacher Of mine once said,"you need it for college." Thats believable. but what about REEAAAALL LIIIIFE??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

definately got point there. every math teacher would tell a student that algebra is "really important" to learn before heading out to the real world. but to be honest, it basically needed in college whenever taking an entrance exam or studying in scientific programs.

Computer programming, landscaping, driving, flying, SCUBA diving, sky-diving...Pretty much everything, really...
My main job is as a database engineer but I have a degree in Electrical Engineering but I'm also a firefighter/EMT, and a Soldier and I can tell you I seriously do use algebra constantly.

I asked my Algebra teacher when I was going to use whatever we were learning, and I belive he example was: If you want to find the height of a tree and you know how long its shadow is and the distance from the end of he shadow to the top of the tree, you can use the Pathagreom therom to find the height of the tree. I was like, one: Why do I care how tall the tree is? and two: Why don't I just hire someone to do that?

To put it real simple: if you don't do your homework, you fail your test, ultimately failing the subject, very likely ending up in a job you don't like. So you might not need algebra outside school, but you sure as hell need school to get somewhere in life. Someone decided algebra is a part of school, therefore you need it.

I'm not saying I won't do the work, I'm just saying I hate it and, wanting to be an author, I really don't need anything more than maybe a simple Algebra class. Also, the excuses teachers make up for why you need this in life are usually ridiculous.

I hate Math ignorance like this. The only reason people DON'T use algebra like this is because they don't understand it. That's why people get sucked punched on their wireless contracts and hosed on high interest loans. You could make the same argument about just about any piece of information: you don't need to know how to drive a car, or cook a meal, or use a computer...but it sure as shit helps.

some schools have financial math classes to help people figure those out
(not saying that algebra isn't important it's just not very obvious how it's going to be used later on in life)

Though I'll admit I've never taken a "financial math" class, I can't imagine how they'd get away with not covering this information.
This is the concept that interest loans, credit cards and payment plans are built off of. Just because they label it FINANCIAL math doesn't magically make it different. It's still algebra, your homework will just be word problems instead of a list of equations.

Same here! If this was CALCULUS, that would make sense. Only engineers and other math-oriented careers need it; the general public doesn't.
But algebra? Really? Yes. We do need it. And if you don't want to use it, I'm sure McDonald's would love help flipping burgers.

Actually, if you plan on being middle or upper management at any time in your life you'll be using math like this all the time, only instead of "Y" and "X" it'll be "supply," "demand," "profit," and "expenses."
If you're smart you'll also look at your bills IRL and look at competitor's prices to see if you're getting good deals, and the math isn't that dissimmilar to algebra.

Right... so stop using your cell phone, computer, dA, electricity, and everything else that relies on algebra to work and live in isolation. Thank god some people move past the "poor me... you mean I have to actually learn something?" attitude.
I'm not saying you need to know electromagnetic laws to use a cell phone, but algebra? Its the foundation for so many things.

I take Algebra I this year (I'm in the 8th grade) and a majority of the stuff I know for a fact will never be used in the workplace irl! A bunch of us even ask the teacher in, like, EVERY chapter "How can we use this in the real world?" and she tells us that most of it won't be used at all, but we still need to know it (for whatever reason). It bugs me xD

seriously, the only math we use in real life is basic math, add,subtract,multiply, divide and fractions i suppose.
a teacher gave me examples of how to use algebra in real life by using an example like , if your throwing a party and some of your guests prefer certain foods, so blah blah blah, and im like "ya in real life your not gonna consider everyone's fav food your gonna get the basics like chips soda and whatever" so thats not a good example of algebra in real life XD
