Can't just say sorry, can ya, you big lug?
Sydney huffed, jerking up on the cinch to secure the saddle. The grullo mare groaned, taking a side step, flicking her ears back as the saddle suddenly squashed around her ribs. A younger horse may have thought they were being devoured by an unseen predator on their back. But Mari wasn't a fussy horse, by any means. Even so, for a horse as level-headed as her to have a reaction indicated the man lost finesse in his strength just then.
Sydney didn't need reminding from a horse. He simply pulled the strap a hair loose before securing it. Working horses was second-nature at this point in his life. On one hand, great he didn't have to think about what he was doing most of the time. On the other hand, it left him to wander onto other thoughts. Of course, the mind rarely wanders into good thoughts. No, no, why think about anything happy when it could be a constant source of misery? Wife cheats on husband, husband cheats on wife, there's a baby involved, let's take all of our anger out on the side piece... the side piece doesn't feel like a side piece anymore, oh, then let's feel like shit about ourselves because the side piece has interests in others but why would that be the side piece's fault when you only ever treated him like a side piece? Jarin is not a side piece, Sydney angrily retorted to himself, slamming the trailer door shut.
He only just stopped short of the man stood nearby, staring down at him with his hard expression. He recognized the guy from the show circuit. Zane Greene. A damn good hand at his business. Sydney hutted out a stiff hand without so much as a hello.
Zane offered a more docile handshake that wasn't so aggressive, giving a laugh, "Well, if it ain't Sydney Brannon. How goes it, fella? Heard you were takin' part 'round here. Ain't seen you in a season or two. Thought you mighta retired on me."
"You ain't so lucky yet," Sydney smirked. "I ain't goin' nowhere." Even as he said it, he wasn't so sure of that. Where the hell was his career going at this rate? Sure, people got divorced all the time and no one thought that much of it, at least not the people out of the immediate circle. But then again, they weren't going to have the full story either. Sydney would be painted as the jackass leaving his pregnant wife to fend for herself and the child. Then if anyone found out about Jarin - Sydney's hands balled into fists just thinking about it. Maybe the rest of the world was more progressive and forward thinking. But where Sydney came from, the people he felt were closest to him, they wouldn't understand at all.
"Well, I took your spot here, so I don't gotta worry about you takin' my job, at least," Zane laughed. He watched Sydney untie his horse from the trailer and bridle her. The look he got from Sydney indicated he wasn't so sure what Zane was talking about. So he continued, "Got hired on for AQHR. They got a us a pretty nice place back at headquarters, lemme tell ya that!" Ah, there was some recognition from Sydney. "It's a pretty good deal. Means you'll be seein' me around these shows to keep you on your toes."
"Aahh," Sydney nodded. "That jus' means they couldn't afford me," he smirked again. "Lucky you."
Zane swatted Sydney's arm, laughing at the teasing. No doubt, Sydney was probably the better hand of the two of them. Zane might have more experience but Sydney had more talent when it came to training which showed when it came time to compete. "It was good seein' you, Sydney! Hope to catch up afterwards, okay?"
A nod was all Sydney offered as they parted ways. Catch up on what, exactly? Anything outside of his job, horse training, and shows was strictly off limits. It wasn't like there was anything else. It was all shit. Sydney sighed, swinging a leg over the mare, checking her to get collected up before walking her off to the open field for warmup. Fully automatic as he went through the motions. Just as a thought slowly lowered itself into the front of Sydney's thoughts like a feather on a breeze, tossing and turning before gently settling to the ground.
Wouldn't it be nice, one day, to be able to think about the good things in your life? Wouldn't it feel nice to be able to speak freely about how your day was going, how your life was going? Not to have to make a mental checklist of what you can't/won't say? Not to feel so guarded about every facet of your life? What if you could just smile like you meant it? Wouldn't that be nice?
What if it all started with an apology?

Here to quietly promote the AQHR NPC show up and running~ And how open they are for competing how you want to! I originally wanted to compete in maybe Level 2 but this pony does Horsemanship and its rare to find a Horsemanship class sooooo Level 3 it is xDDD (That just means, I chose to compete in a lower level that's easier to place in fyi) It's a cool set up! It's open to all breeds too <3 And there's characters available for you to include in art and story! Like I did with Zane~ You get to make up just about anything you want with them so it's fun!

And it was a good opportunity to get Sydney rolling again! In truth, not much time has passed in story where Sydney's been off from showing. I'm just muuuuch slower than my characters lives :''D So I plan to push my western ponies along through these shows! Good experience for them and I can make Sydney look like the professional he's supposed to be. Wee-woo~
