Ty did a double, no, a triple take to see, not Hakuna , but who was on Hakuna. He felt the cold sweat on the back of his neck. The last time anyone sat on that horse...well...problems always seemed to crop up with Chris when people rode that horse. Was Hakuna cursed? He almost didn’t want to make eye contact with Taysom and instead started searching for Chris. Did he know? Of course he did. But why?
“Why do you look like you just witnessed a crime?” Chris asked, coming up from behind Ty still mounted on Risky to watch the rest of the class go.
“Well, I, uh…” Ty sputtered, being caught off guard. “I was just-”
“I asked him to ride my horse. It’s not a big deal.” Chris assumed that was Ty’s concern since he had been a witness to past occurrences. True...there seemed to be drama that followed the stallion around. None of it was the horse’s fault… in a way. He had snapped at Jarin at a competition when the guy was doing honest good work with the horse (when he wasn’t plowing him into the mud). He shouldn’t have let his emotions get to him then. And then he had guilted his dad to impersonate his son and humiliate himself. He...shouldn’t have let his… it was all the same.
“Someone’s gotta knock the rust off,” Taysom entered the conversation. He knew it was a sore spot for Chris and he didn’t like to talk about it. He was surprised he wanted Hakuna ridden at all. He figured the horse would rot away in his stall until the end of his time. He had seen it enough times to know when a rider or an owner gives up or loses interest in a horse. Chris had his other younger horses that were catching stride and doing well. Why would he want to ride a horse that he had some kind of bad history with?
Taysom patted Hakuna’s shoulder, “He’s a good guy. I’ll put a good ride on him, boss.”
Just as Ty didn’t want to look at Taysom, Chris didn’t want to look at Hakuna. How long was he going to pretend there wasn’t a glaring issue here? Years ago, no one knew he had any ill feelings towards the horse. But now… even the spring air was stale with tension. No one wanted to say anything because of how Chris had acted in the past. Chris didn’t want anyone to say anything because he didn’t know how he would act now. So he quietly nodded and headed for the stands to watch but with glossed over eyes. The less detail, the less he had to think on it.
What a shame too. Hakuna was still such an awesome jumper. Time hadn’t touched his performance a bit. He could still float over a jump like he was made of air. The stallion held no reservations over any kind of jump. Water, vertical, oxer, etc. He hit them all like a champ. Such a shame that he was locked out of regular showing. Anyone but Chris could only assume it was because of fear after Chris’s accident on him. But why he wouldn’t let the stallion swap hands or he chased off others that tried to ride him…? It was a mystery that would probably go to the grave with the horse.
