Follows Close-ish After this fiasco: I Dare You -> Stupid Is As Stupid Does -> No Nut November
No Dave this time.
Finally.
Peace and quiet. Left to his own devices, apart from the legal guardian to make sure he didn't actually die overseas. Chris had gotten quite the cold stare when telling his father of his plans to participate in the Svedala Cup. Jax was doing well enough this year that he wouldn't be a complete embarrassment to show up. Probably.
"I don't see why I should let you go…" was Dave's stern response.
But he did.
Obviously.
Because Chris knew Dave had no other means to cling to his "beloved son" than by giving him the things he wanted. Chris almost pitied the man how easy he made it. Even his little sister, Abigail , had pointed out how unjust Dave's treatment of Chris was unfair! He got to ride all the time! He got new horses all to himself and got to travel wherever he wanted! Abigail was lucky if she could beg for a lesson once a week.
It wasn't fair.
Things were so awkward, even Chris couldn't make sense of it. On one hand, he kind of wished Dave would just stop being such a wuss, stand up and be a father figure for once. Give him the punishment he had clearly set himself up for. It wasn't like anyone would argue that Chris had been in the right to pull such a childish act on Dave. Whether it was out of fear Chris would try to cause an uproar or just out of sheer lack of knowing what to even do, Chris had gone unpunished. Chris should feel triumphant for his feat but it just made him more frustrated and filled with guilt. And if that was Dave's way of getting back at him, it made Chris even madder!
On the other hand, he was kind of relieved he could lead Dave around as well as he could. For one, he got what he wanted. And two, he knew what happened when they argued. Nothing made him feel sicker to his stomach than the uncontrollable urge to be right. That he had to one-up Dave, be a step ahead, anticipate his argument and already have a counter-argument. He hated it. The moment he started to get behind or his counter fall apart, that's when things got emotional. That's when it got personal. And nothing else made Chris feel more distressed than that.
Two sides to the coin.
Dave flipped: the easy way out by giving up.
Equally, Chris was faced with a similar problem with his stud horse. He had been working him consistently in preparation for the show. He thought he was finally getting a grasp on the young horse's demeanor. Leading up to the show, he gave him some time off to just chill out. Somewhat of an experiment to see if that would calm him down any.
Wrong.
Chris had been so wrong to let the stud have even a half day off! He could see the correlation with himself already. Give a little and the bastard takes a mile! Bucking, half rearing, tossing his head about, shrill whinnies to the other horses in the warm-up. Chris felt nothing but shame and embarrassment to even sit on this horse. Especially at such an event that was supposed to hail the breed. Well...goes to show Jax was a half-ass and the ass part was showing.
But, unlike Chris's father, Chris had a backbone and wasn't going to just keep letting him have his tantrum and hope he'd come out of it. He booted him in the ribs, cranked his head around and booted him again. Jax grunted and hopped, swishing his tail like a belligerent baby thrashing about, getting his toys taken away. With his head pulled around, he couldn't get a good wind up on a buck or a bolt. He snorted, stomped his feet, tugged hard against the bit, anything he could try to go charging around the arena.
And that's all the stupid horse needed: a firm lesson on what was expected from him and what wasn't going to be tolerated. It wasn't rocket science. No argument or emotions needed.
The proof was in Jax's performance after the schooling. With his renewed confidence in his rider (and his head pulled out of his ass), Jax was behaving like the talent Chris bought him for. Still a bit eager on the first few jumps, but not being the complete idiot moments ago.
Two sides to the coin.
Chris flipped: the right option. Fix it.
Even though it was an easy thing to figure out, Chris highly doubted his father would ever figure it out or have the balls to try. No, he knew how Dave operated when something didn't go how he liked: get rid of it and start again.
Chris smirked. Well, he did have two younger siblings. One he kept under lock and key and one that showed little interest in horses.
Two sides to that coin.
What would Dave flip then...?

Yea, actually sometimes I do write under four digits.
Take it while you can xD

It mah boys!~ Baby Burton and the special pon, Jax xD He's one of those "don't give them a day off" horses. Chris has learned this now.
Chris also thinks, as an approaching mid-teen, he's figured out parenting better than an actual parent. Sure, son. Sure.
But, hey! WE HERE TO REPRESENT! The ups and the downs lmao~
Wanted to try out this kind of setup tradigitally! Was an experience xD As always, Jax is confusing for my brain to shade traditionally. I 150% rely on bringing him to digital to save it :''D But the setup was fun! Ya got sass pon on one side and "no i swear im a good boy" pon on the other xD And then I had to use my fav discord smiley that basically sums up not only the feels in this story bit but just my life in general xD
Enjoy~

Here I was thinking I could ride my mare in a bosal because why not, she said "do you wanna die?"
Someone had came to try her (she's not for sale but like, money talks) and I was like "Well she's kind of a reformed bucker, but like, lunge her". I didn't take my own advice.
