Description

I've decided to revisit my character sheets from my old webcomic, The Continued Adventures of Colin and Mona. It's been two years since my last designs and I feel these new ones are a lot more streamline and appealing.

Colin’s design hasn’t changed much in the basic sense, but rather it has been refined. Changes include swapping his chucks for simple grey shoes (which match his simple dress style), adding cuffs to his khakis and a pocket to his sweatshirt (for optimal hands-in-pocket teen posture). I also lowered the angle of his bangs. I also changed ages around in the bio a bit. If you would like to view the old design, it can be found here.

Bio:

When they were just nine years old, best friends Colin and Mona found a portal to a magical forest called Fairsing while exploring  around the Old Wizards Oak Tree on the outskirts of town. They were children of prophecy destined to defeat the evil Monster King, and with the help of the forest inhabitants were able to return peace to the land. Years have passed and the forest remains peaceful. The portal remained open, and so, the Colin and Mona often spend time in Fairsing; relaxing, exploring and helping the forest inhabitants with minor quests. The Continued Adventures of Colin and Mona explores these tales.

The Book is the Tome of Knowledge, bestowed upon him by the Nymph Queen Titania, it's quite heavy, so Colin doesn't take it out much, but he still likes to read it often.

Colin is a thoughtful, responsible and studious boy. Since becoming a teen, he has become less outgoing and attempts to blend into the surroundings at his school. He tends to lean to the socially awkward side and really dislikes being in the spotlight. The other students at his school don't take much notice of him, besides Mona, who will always make time for him no matter what. Colin constantly feels inadequate when comparing himself to other’s expectations, especially when it comes to interacting with his father, who is often too busy to pay much attention to Colin. He is an only child of a single parent, so much of his home life is spent alone. He spends most days after school and on weekends either in Fairsing or at Mona’s house. When he does return home, he mostly stays in his room.

In the forest, most of his inhibitions seem to disappear, though he is less likely to jump into action than Mona no matter where he is. He is well liked by all the residents of the forest and they often come to him for advice. He's always happy to help, unless it has anything to do with danger, but he is always inevitable dragged into quests by the adventure-loving Mona. He loves to indulge in the fantastical lore of Fairsing and has made it his mission to learn all he can about the creatures who live there. Despite his hero status, he has never felt deserving of the title and often feels like he holds Mona back.

Despite his social failings, he is incredibly bright and excels in critical thought and careful planning. He is undoubtedly the brains behind the operation and his cautious nature get Mona and himself out of tight spots often. He has a rock solid work ethic and after learning to open up with others, he can empathize and work well with them. He does well in school and has exceptional critical thinking skills. He no doubt has a bright future ahead of him, however, his current social standing in his school and home life cause him a lot of stress. He uses Fairsing as an escape from his reality, where his classmates and father ignore him. In Fairsing he is well liked and can be himself without feeling the need to hide or fit in. He is a realist and knows that adult life will be a lot kinder to him than high school life, but until then, he uses his time spent in Fairsing as a way to run from his problems. When it comes right down to it, both Colin and Mona are both dissatisfied with their realities. Mona is unsure of her future and dreads growing up, while Colin has many plans for his future, but feels limited by his own age and life situation.

Real life background information:

Colin has a fairly symmetrical design aside from his hair, this is also present in his expressions. His mouth and eyes tend to stay symmetrical with a few exceptions, when he’s in a bad mood or acting sarcastic for example. This is in contrast with Arve, who tends to have an asymmetrical design and who’s personality is the most at odds with Colin’s. Colin is a much more grounded person, so his expressions are more even, while Mona is much more energetic and animated, hence her more crooked expressions. Colin’s sense of style is that of simplicity and he prefers not to bare much skin, this is reflective of his more closed personality and desire to be overlooked by the public. His blue sweater is a calming and tranquil color, but bright enough to match his more optimistic and content attitude when he’s in Fairsing. He wears khakis to give him a more preppy look, though their bagginess ruin any illusion of fashion they might have had. He wears his hair a bit long in a type of “awkward years bowl cut” which works for his uncool teen style, but would be much more fitting in a fantasy setting (so that’s lucky for him). He has slightly rounded shoulders, the go-to teen posture. His body language is very centralized and he really only shows exaggerated movements when he is caught off guard, even then, his elbows are rarely ever raised above his shoulders. I named him Colin because I always associated that name with really mellow guys, it just seemed to fit him.
