Start orb is the button in the lower left corner of the screen on Windows-based computers, except for on Windows 8 and before Windows 95.
You can change what it looks like on Windows 7 with "Windows 7 Start Orb Changer" by Door2Windows
Download it here: bit.ly/2fC83yY
or just Google it if that doesn't work.

Pretty good start orb, looks very 3D and lifelike which is always a bonus.

Thanks, it's been a while, but I still love how this turned out.

Wonderful work!
Could I integrate it in a future Aperture Science theme please? I will credit you. Thanks in advance.

In order for the perfect use we need the original BMP file. When you upload it to DeviantArt and/or make it downloadable, DA converts the image to a JPG. If you could, copy the original BMP to a ZIP file or a RAR file and upload it here for download or use a service like Filehost and link it. I found a remake someone did because there's no original bmp online, so they uploaded their own as a base. I have that now and it works great. I really like this one because I need to fanboy my computer up in preparation for Portal 2. Great job on the icon, btw.

Unfortunately I don't think I have the original files anymore as I've reformatted recently. Perhaps I will make an update for this and put the bmp in a zip as you say. Thanks for the info!

Awesome ~ I based mine off of this.. It really is confusing how images get tweaked, I tried making a MapleStory start orb, started with 34x34 px and somehow it expanded itself o_0 anyways, great job, and i'll link u the portal theme i'm making.

Yeah, I think that's what happened to mine too. This was supposed to be smaller. But I think that the start orb creator compressed down all the white space to make the image bigger.

I really wish I had the original.
For some odd reason, the transparency on this is all screwed up, when I hover-over it in the start bar, it flickers black (the area around it)
I really like the image, but the flickering is unbearable
Why can't windows just support use of a transparent background .png?!

IKR? But it works fine on mine so I'm a bit confused. Have you tried other programs?

rippinblaise In reply to Draxen [2010-08-07 06:49:02 +0000 UTC]
I tried a couple other programs and the transparency always got messed up, until I went and made my own in inkscape and applied it in startorbz and now it works fine
apparently, if you apply it with the transparent background of a .png, it works, but it doesn't like the artificial transparency in the finished .bmp
I actually have no idea why this is

Well, that's just odd. Either way, it comes out as a nice start orb I think. I just can't wait for Portal 2 now.

it does, I just wish I knew how to draw a portal
I'd make one where normally it is a cloudy (no orange portal existent) blue portal, and when you hover over it, it becomes an orange one (also cloudy) and when you click on it, it is a transparent one, of I don't know what color
or one with the intelligence spheres
I'm also excited for portal 2

That sounds like a cool idea. Have you seen the E3 videos for it?

yeah, they look pretty cool, and in the ones for portal 2, most the stuff is paced at the rate a normal person would go, whereas the ones for portal 1 were really fast paced and impossible just to look cool

though, what bugs me, is the crosshair in the portal 2 videos is like that of the one in portal 1 before you get the portal gun, so you'd never know where you can and can't shoot a portal, was it so hard to implement the crosshair used in portal 1 in portal 2?

Draxen In reply to rippinblaise [2010-08-15 09:11:18 +0000 UTC]
Keep in mind that it was just an E3 video, it isn't anywhere near the final cut.

rippinblaise In reply to Draxen [2010-08-15 18:09:29 +0000 UTC]
I know, still bugs me, though
maybe they want to try a new crosshair, but I could be wrong, maybe it's just not at the top of their list
if you look at the old portal 1 beta/alpha videos, you'll see a different crosshair, so maybe there's a list of things in order of importance in video game making, and it's at the very bottom of the list

Lol. Good Quote. I'm liking windows 7 so far. I mean, I LOVED XP, but this OS just seems to flow better. Less compatible, but that's a given.
And indeed, Portal is Epic.

I don't see how people think it's small, on my PC it's bigger than the taskbar.

I know! I was really confused at that comment. I was actually trying to make it smaller. I'm not sure why it kept coming out so large.

well, that's how big the start orb creator made it. I actually wanted the orbs to appear smaller. Maybe it displays differently on my computer.
