Description just got back from Game Jam where me, and Eddie Bennun did a worshop/lecture thing on design work

I dont know if this was a real production piece. But a better art director would've had the design nailed down in the thumbnail sketch phase first instead of wasting all your time making changes on the polish phase.Β

not my experience

been in the business for 9 years and design changes so much it's crazy- most of the time cuz the story changes constantly and design needs to be changed alsoΒ 

and it really depends on what kind of art director you're gonna wind up with

I was pretty happy when Raphael Lacoste was our Art Director

While I agree with you that a professional wouldn't have fiddled with the design so much along the way, we're talking here about a tutorial... Do you really think that someone with far less experience and practice could have managed such a creative process all at once? From my point of view the way he handled that tutorial is far more accessible to a wider audience this way.

Having worked in production 18 years as a concept artist... I guess my point is to teach nailing down your design early on in the process. so much effort can be wasted trying to repair something so polished. Its like trying to remold metal thats already been shaped. It's better to have 10-20 thumbnails in the hole and make quick adjustments for approval. I believe the Art director in this situation would've already decided a brain wasn't what was needed or that it needed tentacles etc early so as to not waste production time and sent the artist back for another round of thumbnails.


I've seen many guys get in a studio and goof off on their first idea and thats all they have is a really polished first idea that they are stuck trying to fix because they hoped to have an immediate greenlight. had they thumbnailed out 20 ideas in 2-4 hours they'd have many options to choose from.

I've learned that art directors don't like pugs, and it's proabably best to work on different elements in different layers if it ain't personal work. Good stuff man
