They're finally here!!

The moon, that night, reigned crimson and distinct from its retinue of stars. It had sat on its throne early, as if taunting Geronimo in all its levity. It was as if the moon itself knew the tragedy that was to transpire that night.
He hadn’t even been able to stay next to Genevieve in all her pain. He felt too helpless, and even though he wanted to steal every of what could be their last minutes together, he could not bear to do it. The labour had been too complicated, every one of the pups that she had birthed so far had appeared slowly, painfully, and then, slowly vanished into eternity. It was his worst nightmare that perhaps, it would be his sunlight’s fate as well.
It was on the healers’ recommendation that he went out to hunt for Genevieve. Perhaps they had thought that it would distract him, but he could not take his mind off what was happening. Praying was his only resort. Begging, perhaps, being a more adequate term. He begged the moon to stop such tragedy, he would do anything for her to survive. He would havoc every little thing the universe had to offer if that was what it took. He did not care for anything but for her and their little family that could not be.
But it was the smell of blood that took the ghost’s attention. It was recent, and what was worse, he could also smell a pup. With urgency, he turned to the scent, following it as fast as he could, a graceful platinum streak between tinder wood.
Yet it was not his mate that he found.
Starved, bloodied, and bruised, was a mother. A mother with a single pup. He would havoc whatever was needed, he had told the moon, but this time it was not necessary. The young female was on her deathbed. She pleaded for her pup, but the reply the ghost gave was not heard. All life had left her body.

With an eerie feeling, he entered his shack again, to see Genevieve resting. Resting alive and well. Instant relief washed over him, she was there, with him. His sunlight had continued to be, as she would for many years. Yet soon, his happiness was quelled. Only two of them had survived. One took after him and the other, after his mate, a male and a female. His body ached as a whole, with a pain shaped like the images of an infancy that his youth would not live. The tender moments of play, the strict education of scolds. Everything that they would miss, without even knowing.
Only two of six. Let them be three, he thought, as he placed the bundle of fur he had betwixt his jaws next to her mate. The little pup whimpered excitedly at her warmth. Theodora - gift from God.
He curled up next to the new mother silently, in order to not wake her up. Gloom hovered over him like a cloud, and yet he could not do anything but be thankful for what it was compared to what it could have been. A whisper conveyed all that he felt. “I am so proud of you, my love.” The ghost could listen to her heartbeats as he closed his eyes, that mere sound was illumination. He would explain to her later - for now, he would let her rest.
