I like this kind of relationship between heroes and the Antagonist. Bosses like King Dedede and Bowser (and for a third-party example Eggman) actually care for the rivals because of the challenge they provide them. Not so with Ganondorf, he just wants Link dead

Why must Dedede be so much meaner in the anime?
I mean, in the earlier games, he wasn't terribly nice, but couldn't the anime have made his softer side a little more pronounced?

Escargoon doesn't really have any strong feelings towards Kirby one way or another. I mean, he was sad when he thought he had helped literally kill him, but on the whole, he doesn't care that much. Dedede's relationship with Kirby is more...intimate, for lack of a better word. He hates him but he also hates the idea of anything majorly bad happening to him. I personally like to think of them as having an almost brotherly relationship. They fight, they disagree and most of the time the elder wants nothing more than to make the younger's life a misery, but if anyone else tries to....
