Description
Okay, this is the finished version of the sketch I posted a couple of days ago (which has now been duly moved to scraps: [link] )I'll write a few words about the process of inking and colouring the thing first, and then I'll try to explain where on earth I plucked this idea from.
Inking the outlines wasn't particularly eventful, although it did take a while because there's quite a bit going on and there's many twiddly little curly bits. I was contemplating putting the outlined version up somewhere for people to have a go at colouring themselves, just for a giggle, but I haven't done it yet - maybe I'll do it later, maybe not X3
Colouring the picture was another matter entirely. Just putting the base colours on took ages, and then I fiddled with the outlines and broke half of the base colours in the process which wasn't the best of starts. I couldn't decide on the style to use, and every time I experimented with a new one I'd quickly discover that it looked awful and get quite demoralised. In the end I managed to settle on this style long enough to actually get somewhere; the stupidest thing is that this was my first attempt at colouring it, which I threw away and then was subsequently quite relieved that I didn't do a very good job of throwing it away after all.
The colours are a bit on the sketchy side, but I don't think it shows *that* much and it would've taken all week to colour if I'd tried to tidy it all up to a fairly high standard. I think it has a bit more personality looking a bit rough anyways. I will get the hang of this paintering thing eventually.
The story behind this picture actually goes back a year or so. For some reason I was reading about various different systems for elements, since I find the whole idea quite fascinating for some reason. At some point I thought it would be interesting to have races of elves corresponding to the chinese elements, since it would be a bit more unique than the usual "ooh, dark elves and wood elves and stuff" - so I ended up with metal, wood (just can't avoid wood elves, it seems), earth, fire and water.
So, at the front of this picture, from left to right, there's a wood elf (actually made of wood, just to be different), a water elf and a metal elf (which always seemed like a cool idea - for some reason pokey metal hair is just inherently cool, even if it reminds me of the evil sonic robot from Sonic 2). And then at the back, there's an air elf and a fire elf. Ah, yes, spot the "deliberate" mistake - I got muddled up and used the element of air instead of earth. I always thought that the relationship between air and fire was more interesting anyway (fire needs air to survive, but big gusts of wind will blow it out altogether).
And then, for the background, I tried to do something kinda stylish and generic, yet in keeping with the guys in the foreground... so there's some trees (wood), clouds (air and water), a whole load of fire (I think someone's getting a bit excited) and... a cooking pot, because I needed some crude hack to work metal into the pic.
I think I've written enough about it now anyway. Hope you like it
(edit: softened the lines - no more big chunky black stuff!)

I love how you've put Air and Fire together, considering the fact that fire feeds off oxygen it really fits! ;D

I appreciate this picture, because I am currently inventing and writing a fantasy novel series about elves in a world that relies on them being elementals. ^_^ So this drawing was really great to see! I like your style!

me likey! a lot actually...i always like the ideas people get to incorporate (the) elements into writing, or pictures, and you did great. i don't usually see too many representations of the five, since they're less....standard...i guess these days.

It's really cool how you managed to easily make it clear which one represents which element. I especially love the Air Elf's cloud-like hair. ^^ Hm... I haven't drawn my Elemental Guardians for a while, I think you've inspired me to do just that...

I don't like the way the brown one's skin looks. Is it supposed to look like wood? It looks all glossy and stuff ._.

Awesome work with colours and the ilustration in general. I loved the air/fire relationship, it's just too cute to be avoided.
I look forwarding seeing all the characters in their individual portraits. Cool!

ohh! colourful... @.@
i have a hard time inking with my hand as unsteady as it is, all i can really do is try to make a clean sketch from time to time.lol..
how long did it take to line art this piece by the way? :3

I've found it varies a lot between people anyway... some people can make nice, tidy sketches and colour those. Mine are always a big mess, so that's a no-go. I have to ink X3
This one... I've no idea how long it took. According to the file timestamps, I sketched it one day and inked it the next, but I don't know how much of that day was actually spent inking it (...I suspect "not a lot")
So yeah, sorry. It's so long ago that I can't remember

I'm glad you like it. I ended up feeling a bit disappointed with it in the end, but that might've been because I was in a very "this is going to be my awesomest thing ever!" mood while making it, and it didn't quite work out that way. X3

That is cool. I like how the wood elf's nose looks like it's beginning a pinocchio moment.
Apparently, the cauldron is actaully the emblem for earth, according to the chinese system of elements, so really you haven't made a "deliberate" mistake, you just added air in as extra.

I like the colours, but I feel the black lineart doesn't seem ideal for such a colouring style. It's like you got all these lovely colours blending in and out and a black line just stands out, which feels somewhat jarring.

You could have a very good point there. This picture really irks me, and maybe one day I'll figure out exactly why (and, perhaps more importantly, how to fix it)
Actually I think I had a version with softer lines at one point. Maybe I'll play with it in a bit...

I like that you used air rather than earth, it probably would have looked too similar to wood or metal otherwise. As for the pot, maybe an anvil would have worked?
Either way, awesome job on this!

Neat! It's kinda nice to have some different type Elves. The only problem I'm having is making sure that the metal Elve is a female. I think I see lip stick, or something, on her lips along with the perils leads me towards the female direction. Problem is I can't really see much beyond the neck. Oh well, I've had worse problems
