Description
This is a gift I made for TimmyJCoyote I wanted to upload it earlier but I had such problems with my account that I can place it only know.I decided to draw Timmy as he appeared in some of his Halloween pics where he dressed his character like Pinocchio from the Disney movie.
However for the pic I decided to stay more faithful to the original story written by Carlo Collodi. You may not know but actually the disney movie is based very loosely on the original story (I guess that probably Disney decided that something more kid friendly was necessary).
So,in my pic, I decided to draw Timmy as Pinocchio (I chose to keep the Disney clothes for Timmy/Pinocchio as they are more easy to recognize) in company of Mangiafuoco (the character that in the Disney movie is changed into Stromboli, the evil puppeteer).
In the original story Mangiafuoco is very different from the villain Stromboli in the movie.
He is described as "... a large man so ugly, he evoked fear by simply being looked at. He had a beard as black as a smudge of ink and so long that it fell from his chin down to the ground: enough so that when he walked, he stepped on it. His mouth was as wide as an oven, his eyes were like two red tinted lanterns with the light turned on at the back, and with his hands, he sported a large whip made of snakes and fox tails knotted together." Though imposing, Mangiafuoco is portrayed as easily moved to compassion, which he expresses comically by sneezing instead of crying.
Always in the story Pinocchio meet Mangiafuoco in chapter X.
After having promised of being a good boy and to go to school and learn Pinocchio heads to school. However his propositions of going to school quickly fall when he learns about a puppet show and he decide to to tot he teathre insted of school. However during the play the puppets recognize Pinocchio as one of them and they happily ask him to join them. Pinocchio enthusiastically jumps on the stage along with his "brothers and sisters" ruining the show. Mangiafuoco, the director, is furious with Pinocchio and, after noticing that he is made of a nice seasoned wood, order his puppets to burn Pinocchio for punishment as well as for finish to roast his mutton.
desperate, Pinocchio starts to cry and sob and Mangiafuoco (that in reality has quite a good heart despite his gruff exterior) is moved to compassion and spare Pinocchio from his fate instead ordering his puppets to burn one of his own puppets, Harlequin instead.
Pinocchio, who is a friend of Harlequin, begs Mangiafuoco to spare Harlequin's life but Mangiafuoco seem to be immovable and doesn't want to listen to Pinocchio.
At this point Pinocchio bravely offers himself to be burned in place of Harlequin and at that Mangiafuoco is once again moved to compassion and he allows Harlequin to live, resigning to eat his mutton half raw.
After that Mangiafuoco asks Pinocchio about his old father and when he learns of the old man's poverty and misery he gives Pinocchio five golden coins, telling him to give them to his father along with his "most warm greetings".
For Mangiafuoco's clothes I was inspired by Lionel Stander interpretation of the characther in the 1972 Italian miniseries, "The Adventures of Pinocchio" directed by Luigi Comencini.
