Hi guys!
I know that I haven't posted in a really long time, but the truth is that I have been busy with work, on top of the fact that there has been plenty of games that I have been playing recently.
But anyway...
I have always been interested in making my own Pokemon, have had ideas stewing for years, but has never really felt confident in drawing them myself due to my personal lack of confidence in my skills. Capturing the Pokemon-style in terms of design is really hard and I will fully admit that my shading/highlighting-work isn't the best, but I am learning as I go and I am becoming really happy with my current batch that is residing in my sketchbook. Be prepared to see more in the coming weeks...
For the record, the Jakar-region is mostly based on a mish-mash of different tropical settings and locations; such as Thailand, Indonesia and the many islands of the Caribean. Not necessarily in terms of design but rather on the concept of a tropical vacation-paradise that is beautiful and full of life on the surface but is concealing the poverty and squalor that a lot of the native inhabitants actually have to live through on a day-by-day basis.
Most of the stats for my fakemon were based on already existing pokemon that serve similar roles, in this case a 3-stage bug-family, with some points and stats swapped around here and there. I also want to note that the learnable move-lists are not fully complete, but rather noting a pattern related to the pokemon's role or point out unusual moves (not necessarily apparent here but will be relevant with some of the other entries down the road).
The Snifftle-line actually started out based on a lunar moth with wings of stained glass, but over time I felt like it looked too similar to the other bug-types that already exists with nothing that sets it apart. But I eventually shifted the entire concept when I saw a picture of a strange-looking kind of insect called a Hummingbird Moth that just begged to be turned into a Pokemon, and working backwards from that I eventually tied the preevolutions to weevils and their extended snouts that lengthens into that long tongue upon full evolution. From there, the idea of the first two stages spending their lives constantly sniffing for the right berry to help them evolve finally made them feel like real Pokemon.
They were the first pokemon I designed that I was really happy with, and as such it is only fitting that I start off my new regional dex with them.
Fun fact: The height and weight of this pokemon was based on a Kiwi-bird, just to give you a sense of scale.
