Description Well, it will be Valentine (as well as Shrove Saturday in my country o_o) soon in here and what do I post up as pre-Valentine deviation?
This freaky animation of a Lich (with differently-colored vambraces than the original 3 models as well!)! LOL I bet that warrior1944 would be proud of me ... sort of, like Judge Death being proud of his newest novice`s attempts of making the living wonder if he/she is mad crazy with all undead hassle.

So yeah, this is how Liches legitimately look like in Might and Magic VI! Vastly different than in the next installments (Might and Magic VII where they take their Heroes of Might and Magic III forms and Might and Magic IX, where they get bazillion times more freaky images9.gry-online.pl/galeria/… ... and their top tier being the handsomest and the freakiest of them all! game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/… ) just to be then totally revamped by Ubisoft to look more flesh- and leper-like, which rings all the wrong bells with me and is one of many reasons I don`t think much in going to Ashan in other games (Might and Magic Heroes VI and Might and Magic X: Legacy) except in Dark Messiah. And even then I have different reasons in going to Ashan through that game and Liches are not one of them No offense intended, Ashan fans, since we all know that Lich-changes in both Enroth and Ashan are vastly different, thus their respectible Liches look differently as well.
How to you make a Lich in Enroth? This would be the closest explanation that 3DO and new World Computing has given us: i.imgur.com/FAhfA.jpg and even that is only revealed when we play Might and Magic VII and our party joins the Necromancers of Deyja. Basically, this is how the Ritual of the Endless Night goes through and once the new-made Lich arises, their phylactery needs to be in their close proximity if not on their person almost all the time (maybe that`s the reason we can kill Liches so easily in both MM6 and MM7?), even though there is a suspicion that Liches in Jadame (aka MM8) don`t need to be so personally tied to their phylacteries. But well, it could also be that the Ritual performed there is different as well and as a result the new-made Liches don`t need to carry their Soul Jars with them (which is literally a jar with gross content in VII, believe me. And if you lose it, well, in time you will lose your Lich as well, so keep it on their person ALL THE TIME! Really, because I tested it myself!), just like it`s different in Might and Magic IX, which takes place on Axeoth (after Enroth had gone boom and probably killed almost everyone we got to know on Enroth ), where Liches are made with the aid of of a weird brew and a giant machine inside the Lich Lab. Pretty complicated, but I guess this is the reason the biggest amount of Liches found on Axeoth are inside the Lich Lab.

I hope you don`t mind me posting this wall of text in here It`s almost all info for anyone that is not as familiar with the franchise of Might and Magic prior Ubisoft`s Ashan as I am.

I take no credit in creating this thing, just animating it for the web! The real creators of it are 3DO and New World Computing for making and animating them first for Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven + Cyrus Annihilator that had ripped the sprites off the game and made them available for everyone of us to see (and to change + animate, no matter if Ubisoft would not be happy with this at all, methinks).

And yes, these Liches have Thundercat symbols on their belt buckles, LOL!!! And I can prove it all as well by comparing their belt buckles with the ThunderCats Logo   Apparently that is a little Easter Egg between many others the game hides. So ... yeah, Thundercat fans, are you all Liches nowadays?

Well, one chap you get to meet at Castle Darkmoor is called "Lich King" (who might as well be the mysterious nameless Lich King we get to see in one of the cutscenes - sta.sh/022kzize9wghmightandmagic.wikia.com/wiki/F… ) and has the same sprite you see here, thus I totally believe you there ... and when it comes to Lich King Gryphonheart, funnily, he was actually supposed to be a bloody Hero in Heroes III, but it was ultimately unused and after they found his portrait (mightandmagic.wikia.com/wiki/F… ), they utilized it as the portrait of the one that turns your Dark side Wizards into Liches, as you can see here: sta.sh/0acn4xt8qs0 . No worries about you not listing Sandro, since well, he is already a Hero and even in his own cutscenes he looks very very different from other ones. By far the only other noticeable thing regarding him being the lead figure instead of being a behind-the-scene-guy or, more generally, The Chessmaster tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php… is him actually taking lead of the Necromancer`s Guild in Shadowspire (MM8) in order to ensure its very survival in the war against the Temple of the Sun which the latter actually caused themselves because they wished (and still wish) to eradicate it from the face of the planet. Whenever they survive it or not is completely depended on your own character/party when choosing the ones that would join the Alliance of Jadame ... (even though I`ll still try to give you the screenshot of what he says after both Catherine and Roland Ironfist come to Jadame in order to support the Alliance, since I bet his reaction would be, well, priceless, given his past dealings with their lands~ )
Hahaha, you got that right and it`s actually one of the things that was very very weird to both me and my bro when we first played the game, as if he is actually become the caretaker of Nekross in a way while Gauldoth actually rules it. Of course, given his fame and our knowledge of him, we can totally suspect that this might be just one of his brilliant moves in rebuilding the network of people that he would try to use in order to try conquer the world again, one way or another, just like what his Heroes IV bio says here:
"Sandro's instinct to survive is almost as strong as his tireless ambition. His network of power in the old world was destroyed by the Reckoning, so now he has to start all over. Unfortunately, many of his old allies perished as well. But no one can say Sandro isn't up to the challenge."
Well, well, looks like we had cracked this nut there far and wide, haha. Warcraft mirroring M&M, so because of that M&M mirrors Warcraft in its later parts? Boy, given all the referential playing we had already discussed in one other comment chain, I wouldn`t expect nothing more and nothing less from such cheeky company like the 2 we get to see here, even if Ubi didn`t get that tongue-in-cheek reference playing down to a T unlike 3DO. Yet. Still, kudos to them tho for making a joke about that, even if people were really really mad (and maybe still are) ...
... and speaking of Griffins, do you think that the Slavic names the majority of people there got could also be the reference/call-out to all the Slavic fans of this franchise, most prominent ones being Russians and all, kind of like how 3DO made the same with its NWC Dungeons in later M&Ms?

Well, with Gauldoth, it might hard to take over, even for Sandro, as Gauldoth is VERY intelligent, and savvy about the world, and about Sandro's own reputation.

Although this is a conflict(Sandro vs Gauldoth), which would be VERY interesting to see, that probably would be a party of Xanatos Speed Chess between the two XD

About Griffin dynasty having Slavic names, this also made me curious. I thought it was partially because of Nival being a Russian based company, but I think it was very dependent on Ubisoft, who kept the theme even after they stopped working with Nival. I guess they could find it interesting, to make a Slavic based country and characters, as Slavs are oddly VERY underused in Fantasy, despite being incredibly important in Europe's history. Poland and Russia, in the past(well Russia still is, but you get the point), were among the most powerful countries in Europe, or even the world, in some time periods, being even arguably the MOST powerful.

Slavic history, is also full of ideas for stories of war. For example Poland is argued to be historically the most invaded country in history(even if we Poles won most of these conflicts, as pointed out in the comments):
www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UL8MC…

Russia, and other Slavic countires also aren't slouches with wars, and invasions, if you read through their histories.

Russia also historically considered itself the inheritor of the Eastern Roman Empire/Byzantine Empire, and by extension, the Roman Empire, similarly of how the Griffin Empire, is the Succesor of the Falcon Empire. Many claimed they are Rome's successors, but you see, after the Eastern Roman Empire/Byzantine Empire fell, Eastern Orthodox Church, was in in a significant part taken over by the Russian Orthodox Church, and in 1721 the first Russian Emperor(although far from the first Russian Tsar), Peter I abolished completely the separate patriarchate(the governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church) and so the Church effectively became a department of the government, ruled by a Most Holy Synod composed of senior bishops and lay bureaucrats appointed by the Emperor/Tsar himself, meaning the Russian Orthodox Church was essentially transformed into a governmental agency, a tool used to various degrees by the Tsars. This all helped Russia to contend as being "The Third Rome", after the Western Roman Empire(the "first" Rome), and the Eastern Roman Empire(the second Rome), fell.

Also, just an interesting observational tip, compare the crown of this Lich sprite with the infamous Crown of Final Dominion you can find in MM8 here:

Hmm, makes you wonder if the very powerful, unique Lich King of MM6, is maybe Mederon, wrongly searching for his crown on Enroth...

Guy was implied to be extremelly powerful, to unite Nighon.

I wonder about that as well and this could be one of the many possibilities, since well, you get rumors of a pirate`s treasure in MM6 as well (apparently named "Silveka"), which actually isn`t even on Enroth, but in Jadame (MM8) instead, even though what you find is Dread Pirate Stanley`s treasure instead.

I would agree with you there, that Xanatos Speed Chest between the 2, I would love to see that as well. Not to even mention how would that influence life in Nekross for both Kreegans and the living that are still residing in there as a part of the living population, even if I kind of see that they would wish for "Father Gauldoth" to win instead of "Sandro the Great" ...

Aye, just like that, thus it`s very very interesting to see that this part of the game is being distinctively Slavic ... and this brief history lesson really mirrors itself in the game in some way at least until the Charter of the Griffin was signed, which essentially separated the Church from the State after Anastasya and her siblings made sure that the Archangel Uriel`s machinations were known to the populace of Holy Falcon Empire back then. Not to even mention what kind of mythological beings exist in Slavic mythology as well ...

Well, the duality of Elrath and Malassa and their conflict, may be connected to Perun(the god of thunder, but sometimes connected/conflated/substituted with Svarog, God of Ligh and Sun), rivalizing with his brother Volos/Veles(God of the Underworld), who often appeared as a three headed dragon(Zmey).

While modernly, it's easy to assume Perun/Svarog was good, and Volos/Veles evil, it was more complicated, with Veles being considered at times more mercifull.

In fact, in many of the Russian folk tales, Veles, appearing under the Christian guise of St. Nicholas, saves the poor farmer and his cattle from the furious and destructive St. Elias the Thunderer, who, of course, represents the old Perun.

In fact, the duality and conflict of Perun and Veles does not represent the dualistic clash of good and evil, but rather, the opposition of the natural principles of earth, water and substance (Veles) against heaven, fire and spirit (Perun), similary how Malassa and Elrath represent the duality of Darkness and Light, not of Evil and Good.

So even Ubi didn`t go away from the established Grey And Gray Morality previous installments went with while 3DO was still alive and kicking? That`s pretty awesome to hear (as well as comforting, since the franchise has been known to bloody start like that, just like in one of our old comments where we were discussing the overall tone of shades of grey being present in all of the Heroes and M&M games to date, no matter how much it tries itself to disguise as Black VS White trope, haha) and given how big the Slavic fanbase for this game is, I can totally see this as being enough of a reason that the devs would know about those legends as well and then nicely weave them into the story like that.
I do wonder what did prompt them to change Svetlana`s name to Sveltana tho in English versions of Heroes VI ...

Glad that my walls of text help people understand the way you see these badasses that can be pretty trollish as well because they will gladly destroy any magical enchantment and buff spell you have on yourself, like Bless, Heroism, Power ... thus you really need to be naturally buffed already to really go toe to toe with those enemies and just smash them before they turn you into slime Your luck that MM7 Liches are like skeletons too, only they are much, much worse than these dudes; while you could mop the floor with them after you`re achieved level 40-something, the MM7 ones don`t joke around and even if you`re level 50 they will be still glad to burn you to ashes in a dragon fire they can easily cast on your ass.
As long as this doesn`t do harm to your body, like the liver issues you had once that you had told me ...

I actually wonder why do they have Thundercats logo on their belt buckles, to be honest, beside being obvious Easter Eggs (kind of like NIN logos on nailboxes in Quake) No matter if the series in question is probably the Classic one.

Hehe, as long as you can afford repairs it`s pretty fine with me. And you don`t try to negotiate in selling it as well, just like with Mortis

Yeah and I actually don`t know if Moandor (the name of the said Warrior Lich) could be considered a lich in a real sense of word. His biography states: "Moandor's charismatic style somehow stayed with him after he was transformed into a lich. Strangely enough, this provides him with the ability to lead and recruit new liches more effectively than any other hero." and yet by the game files he`s considered a Death Knight (aka the more might and warrior-oriented caste of the undead society).
Unless Death Knights can include both those that are still in the flesh and those that had shed it at the same time?

But yeah, Darth Vader is a great villain and is considered the best villain under Hannibal Lecter and Norman Bates. I think Bates got a place above Vader since Psycho was a Hitchcock classic movie.
