Description it me!! :𝔻
was on such a roll from the last ref that I took another day off from owed things to go ahead and finish this one too (and edit a few more refs while I was at it) >u>
borrowed a few elements from past arts and gally's ref, and worked on this while watching one of my fav youtuber's streams (kickthepj), cause it's fun to draw with company~
and now I'm JUST about done all the badly needed ref revamps; after zack and west's I'll be pretty pleased with all existing ones and can just update 'em as required instead of redrawing them every few years :3c
also I have like 15 other sketches in my ref wips folder I poke at on and off every so often, of characters I've had for ages and have never properly introduced or drawn before. stoked to show 'em off as they finishhh

as this is just... myself, all the info below are just about me haha

~~~
• autistic-equivalent; INFJ ; spiritual but very detached from the church
• female but rather androgynous, like most dragons
• canadian: lives in NS, born in BC, but loves flying basically anywhere
• mixed breed with both thermal glider and oceanic dynamic soaring blood, so wings are large and able to comfortably soar for hours without landing, while still maintaining agility and dexterity (they're actually a bit undersized in the ref, for composition's sake)
• has a gland at the back of the throat that produces a liquid that ignites upon contact with oxygen, so can be expelled to 'breathe' fire. dragons with such abilities have thick fire resistant saliva to prevent burning of the mouth
• hoards art, plushies, soft blankets, cool things like fossils, gems, animal parts, information pertaining to special interests
• most time spent drawing, fantasizing, writing, otherwise creating
• always listening to music of varying genres, but favs are video game/anime soundtracks, electroswing, whatever you call coldplay and imagine dragons, and pop punk (will not shut up about panic! at the disco, all time low, or green day)
• other possible plushies include a bulbasaur, jolteon, toothless, charizard, or okapi
no nsfw (but cute fun interactions with own and others' ocs are very welcome)
cherished orca
favourite scarf
other favourite scarf
another possible hat
beloved blankie, usually wrapped over shoulders and wings
a few more fun notes about this sole species of sapient feral dragons, amongst other things:
(I've admittedly spent a bit less time on it than most of the other races of my world, since it feels a bit 'meta' ahah
... hence the lack of proper species name yet, so for the moment I'm just sticking with the very vague "western dragon")
• - dragons are a very diverse clade of reptiles that have been around since the time of the dinos, though not directly related to them (like pterosaurs). in those times there were many more species that no longer exist, and the size of those dragons were some of the biggest flighted creatures to ever live - t-rex sized beasts whose 100ft wingspans would blacken the sun and cast vast shadows in their wake. unfortunately this size came at a cost when the meteor struck, and most species went extinct save for a few smaller individuals
- these are the species that all modern dragons evolved from, splitting into the three broad categories of "western", hexapods that retained the third set of limbs for specialized purposes, mainly flight; "wyrms", terrestrial drakes that largely lost the tertiary limbs to retain energy; and "eastern", the most magically adept of the three, who fly with the use of magic rather than wings, and are mostly confined to eastern asian regions.
- the largest dragons today are roughly rhinoceros sized aquatic and flighted species, the latter of which have been trained throughout millenia for riding by some groups of bipedal peoples, but are currently endangered due to habitat loss and hunting
- dragons can be found on every continent except antarctica, though a few aquatic species have been found visiting the waters there every so often
• there are two specific species of dragons that qualify as People; this one, and draconians. both are the closest relatives to each other, hence certain similarities like 'hair' (which is in fact modified feathers that for all intents and purposes acts like hair), brows, paws, some other traits, but are removed enough to be unable to crossbreed
- a lot of monster species are pretty widely diverse compared to humans, who tend to have VERY mild differences in comparison ("if two of you have the same skin and hair, how do you tell each other APART??")
this especially applies to dragons, coming in a rainbow of colours and having different horns (or lack thereof), a bit more variation in size (most head heights coming in between 4ft and 6ft), and various hair/frills/spikes
• there was historically much disagreement over the classification of both draconic people as 'people', due to the more feral and animal-like nature, and the discrimination and disdain typically held towards dragons by conservative colonialist christians due to misinterpretation of biblical texts. in european medieval times this often resulted in the popularity of 'crusades' and 'quests' to annihilate local populations of dragons, both sapient and otherwise, under the misguided notion of dragons being 'demonic', and due to a few run-ins between farmers and wild drakes
- these days there are 21 universally agreed upon species of people. some animal activist groups argue that it should be increased to include certain intelligent animals like whales, apes, or corvids, while some conservative sects believe maintain that it should be decreased, believing the biblical "in God's own image" to signify humans as the solely most refined race, others interpreting it as "humanoid-faced" species (excluding felids, canids, dragons, and arguably sphynx), whereas the most liberal simply believe the term to mean "having a soul".
the scientific community however uses certain specific qualifications to determine which counts, and according to those, only these 21 do
- since many races don't want to or can't comfortably live a 100% urban lifestyle and prefer a more nature-based existence, many governments have set aside vast protected areas spanning multiple borders for many peoples to share and partake in a traditional way of life, either exclusively or mixed with a modern one
