Description
“C’mon, ya big baby, it’s not that hard.”“Says the hundred pound biped.” For the first time in memory, Kai is viewing an expression short of confident on his lover’s face, as Raziel continues staring steadily at his skate-sporting hooves. His legs remain locked. Kai thinks he sees them quiver, from cold or from fear he knows not. “I hate this,” Raziel says, risking a glimpse at Kai before focusing back on his static hooves. “I hope you know that I fucking hate this.”
“Oh, don’t worry, I’m well aware.” Kai faces Raziel and skates backwards as smoothly and effortlessly as walking. When Raziel doesn’t follow, he returns to take Raziel's gloved hands and attempts to pull him along. Raziel’s legs do not budge. “It’s really not so bad once you start moving,” Kai implores. He ignores the friendly faces passing by that are grinning at the centaur’s very clear inexperience; a curious child giggles before zooming along past the pair. After a moment of futilely tugging him along from the front, Kai lets go and vanishes behind Raziel. Before he can question him, Raziel feels two paws on his thighs, and the ice beneath him slowly inching backwards. Kai coughs out a half-laugh at the strangest complaining sound he’s ever heard from the man’s mouth.
“Tell me again why I let you talk me into this,” Raziel says over his shoulder.
“Because you love me and for no other reason, I’m sure,” Kai replies and returns to Raziel’s front. "C'mon," he begs with a tilt of his head. "Just a few minutes, okay? Just try to move your legs for a few minutes, and then we can go get Starbucks instead, alright?"
The two look at each other: Kai imploringly, Raziel sullenly, both having more fun than they'd like to admit.
"Fine," Raziel concedes, as always. "Five minutes. And then we're taking a nice long normal walk after."
"Hell yeah! Okay off we go. Slide your legs forward a little. Yes, yes, there we go! Oh my god you look like you're dying."
Raziel's face and voice are deadpan. "I am. I feel like I'm going to fall over or collapse and kill you."
"Well, if that happens," Kai says patiently, continuing to guide the very grumpy centaur along, "I'll have gone out doing what I loved. Being under you and talking you into weird shit."
He's finally cracked a smile out of the stone façade Raziel's been wearing. "Shh, there's kids around."
"Yeah, yeah, they're too busy actually skating to give a crap. C'mon." He lets go of Raziel's hands and moves to his side, grabbing and holding his arm there instead. At last, the hooves are finally trudging along in a sort of sliding march. "Not so bad now? Look, you haven't fallen over at all."
"Ngh," says Raziel. "I guess."
Kai offers an affirming grin and squeeze.
They make one dawdling loop around the circuit, then one more at a slightly quicker pace, before Raziel says, "Alright, that's enough, you got your fun seeing me look like a bozo. Now let's go return the rink's only set of extra large hoof skates so someone else can suffer. Please."
"Fine, a valiant attempt was made. You're so brave, my knight in shining skates," Kai coos. He balances effortlessly on one skate to reach up and kiss Raziel's chilled cheek before the two head back to the changeroom.
"You're happy, then?" Raziel asks.
"Oh, very. Legit didn't think I'd even get you here,” Kai giggles. He leads them to a bench, briskly removes his own skates, then lifts one of Raziel’s forelegs to assist with his.
“That’s good. In that case, it was worth it.”
Kai pauses his deft unstringing to look up, and the smile he mirrors is as bright as the rink’s shimmering ice.

done during two dnd sessions; had this half done for a whiiileeee until I finally felt like spending the energy to learn how to draw ice rinks lol
centaurs do not like unstable terrain. feels super uncomfortable, like putting shoes on a dog for the first time xD
for this reason, they were never really a seafaring race, so most areas they've historically populated were attached by land bridges at one point or another.
there are exceptions, of course, hence centaur skates existing at all, but a lot of eccentric adrenaline-based hobbies are much more common amongst other species - centaurs excel further at sports of the running, strength, hunting, or ball varieties than ones their anatomy poses limits to such as surfing, gymnastics, or climbing ones, which must be altered to their needs.
there are all kinds of intricacies regarding species dynamics in professional sports, including a whole bunch of fun olympic ones that are wing-specific!
... also behold, razzy with an alternate hairstyle AND expression for once, lmao
