Description

  When he came to, Zodiac was in the dark. And something felt off. He opened his eyes to his hands in front of his face, except... they were different. Membranes of skin connected his fingers, claws tipped his fingers in place of flat nails, and his skin was now a mottled grey not unlike that of his fur, rather than the usual tanned skin. His shock was evident, as tattered fins on his forearms flexed to the revelation. It was only when he went to gasp and salted water entered his mouth in place of air that the realization hit, and in a panic he scrambled his way to the surface.

  “Babe! There you are!” He’d barely taken a breath when the voice of his love focused his attention. Jay’s face approached, except…

  “... You look beautiful!” Zodiac exclaimed. It was true - whatever strange magic that altered their forms had blessed Jay with ivory-white skin and heart-shaped fin ears, tipped with the same black of his natural form’s dark legs and the pink of his dyed hair.

  He giggled. “As do you!” He darted forward to take in the rest of Zodiac’s shape, and that was when he saw the long tail and matching heart-shaped fluke and everything fell into place.

  “Oh, that spell, we, we’re merma-”

  Satisfied with the other’s fins and tail, Jay had emerged in front of him again. “Doi, took ya long enough.” Another giggle. Then he grabbed Zodiac’s hand and gestured to follow. “C’mere.”

  And Zodiac obeyed, locomotion much easier than he’d expected, thick tail propelling him forward more efficiently than any bipedal diving suit. His new form’s eyes automatically covered themselves with a clear third eyelid, and he thought he felt something behind his nose shut to prevent accidental inhalation of water. Presently, Jay turned and grinned at him. Zodiac took a moment to appreciate the surroundings: sun reflecting off the surface above, nothing but teal blue-green all around and deep shadows below, some school of fish flitting about in the distance, and his love gazing at him through it all, like a distant dream he’d once had.

  Jay made a sound, a sort of high pitched whistle that native merfolk use to communicate to each other below the waves, that Zodiac somehow understood as a sort of content sigh. Jay's fingers trailed up Zodiac’s arm to his face, where they briefly touched his ears curiously, before pulling him into a kiss.

  When they’d surface later for a breath, Jay would mention despite adoring his normal body being quite able to get used to this, the two would set off to land and wait for the temporary hex to wear off, and explore their bodies further while they’d wait, but in the meantime, at the present, they did nothing but enjoy this magical moment.

... okay listen they may be ABSOLUTELY OPPOSED to ever being drawn as humans, since that's the monster equivalent of whitewashing (skinwashing?), but are just fine with being drawn as other types of monsterpeople haha ft. my go-to s-shaped mermaid pose lmao. not really canon but I just really wanted to species-bend 'em for fun :3c
and DAMN I really love jay's design so uhhh I might end up drawing them again like this sometime xD also think I might finally finish that mlp one I did before, and the chester/oliver su-style fusion too where they become a hippocampus-style dude heeheehoo 👀
also one of the other first things jay does that I did not feel like detailing here is finding his new dick and pullin it out to mess with it a bit ahahhhhhh and zo has to playfully slap him away from trying to test this newfound flexibility, jay may grow and change but some shit never changes l'D
