Description VIDEO IS AT: [link]

The first in my planned series of Youtube video tutorials. It was created to supplement a presentation I was giving for the local library chain. To justify the amount of time I put into producing it, I needed to make it web-compatible as well. I've actually had it posted for a month or two now, but I realize I've neglected to mention the fact on any of my art accounts. That's me - on top of things.

Sooo....

Ta-daa! use the link above to view the movie -if you find it informative, please feel free to share it with others.

Actually, if anyone has any feedback, I'd love to hear it - did you find it funny? Annoying? Informative? Too technical, too simplistic? What types of tutorials would interest you most in the future, what subjects and areas of emphasis do you want to hear about? The goal here is to make my videos as helpful and entertaining as possible - and you're the target audience, so definitely let me know what you'd like to see! 8 )

Also, disclaimer - between working on Prelude and Volume 3, these videos will be few and far between for the time being.

I found it very interesting, but I don't have big, fancy things like photoshop. XD I use Gimp, which doesn't seem to have adjustment layer abilities. How might I do this type of lighting with Gimp?

Hmm.. I don't know, actually. 8 ( I don't know the first thing about the Gimp program - I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

I have never used masking before, I have to admit that its a easier way to shadow than the one I am using recently.

Very informative, and funny by the way. (I loled a lot when you were shading, "now let's put some colors on and see what happens!... ew no...")

PS: I wished making BG were that simple...

Cool, I'm glad this was possibly helpful. Oh man, I wish backgrounds were really that easy too... They take me like 5X longer than the actual characters most of the time.

I totally know that, but for me its almost over 9000X times harder.

(I really do suck at backgrounds)

I really like this tutorial. It really showed me how to use photoshop to bring my drawings to life. Until now, I've been using flash for inking, but Photoshop can do so much more, and this video just scratched the surface.

Excellent! If it was helpful at opening any doors, then that's fantastic. It's definitely a fun program, and there are tons of other techniques beyond the one I highlighted in the video. Thanks for watching!

At first, i couldn't believe that that was an actual error xD but yeah, I would try this except I'm a little behind the times. I did try some of it in flash though. With mixed result. some day, when i have a job, and a real computer, i WILL try this, cause it looks awesome.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dreamkeepers In reply to ArjayC [2009-06-21 21:33:41 +0000 UTC]

Excellent! 8 ) I've never tried any of the shading techniques in flash, that's an interesting idea... It'd be nice if everything crossed over flawlessly, but usually there's at least a strong handful of road-bumps and setup differences between platforms. Especially when it's me at the helm and I don't know for jack beyond the comfort of my squishy safe Photoshop walls.

ArjayC In reply to Dreamkeepers [2009-06-22 13:45:49 +0000 UTC]

I think that using a second layer to color over the sketch worked best, and unfortunately, even that wasnt flawless. It was either the paintbrush (way to big)or the pencil tool. The problem with the pencil, is that it has three modes, and they all made it look terrible. On the plus side, i found out how to make some ok-ish shadows.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dreamkeepers In reply to ArjayC [2009-06-30 23:27:40 +0000 UTC]

Getting some shadow-techniques out of the effort isn't a bad tradeoff...

I don't know about Flash as much, but the pencil tool in Photoshop is not my favorite, it seems to make everything it colors harshly and unpleasantly pixelated.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArjayC In reply to Dreamkeepers [2009-07-01 13:04:07 +0000 UTC]

Bleh, pixelated. The thing i dislike about flash is that the lines all have rounded edges, which can be quite annoying at times, as the have a tendency to stick out.

Okay. First of all, your voice sounds like Kermit the Frog, in a totally awesome way.

This is a great Photoshop Coloring 101. You cover the basics, and better yet, you explain the WHYS as well as the HOWS, which I think is extremely important. Very easy to understand, straightforward. This even refreshed me on some things I'd forgotten, chained as I am to my watercolors!

Dreamkeepers In reply to BeatingDeadHeroes [2009-06-21 21:31:22 +0000 UTC]

YESSSss! I take 'Kermit voice' as a strong compliment. He was my favorite on 'Muppet Babies' when I was a kid. ...In highschool.

I'm glad the tutorial works well and comes across understandably, thanks for the feedback! Ooh - watercolors? Neat! There are great effects and textures that brushwork lends itself to, definitely not a bad thing to get stuck on.

The creepiest thing was when I fiiiiirst found your site, before I knew you were a budding Indie comic with no previous works out, I google Images searched your name and there was this seventy year old wrinkly guy I thought was you for a while there.
So. You can see how Mr. Cleese gave me a fright.

I think everyone here loved the disgrunted cleese!
I never thought about using the layer mask for shading/lightning, I should try out that : many thanks for this tutorial (though now I am actually wondering what program you used to do the tutorial! )

Dreamkeepers In reply to Xss- [2009-06-19 00:08:00 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad the tutorial may come in handy! The program I used to edit and 3-Dimensionalize some of the shots was Adobe After-Effects. I'm not certain, but they may have merged that with photoshop in their newer software releases.

One thing I have never quite understood is shadows. I use references and comparisons to select where shadows and highlights go, but I cannot seem to figure out the pattern. Are there rules for shadows? Could you post a tutorial, or just write them out, if there are?

I'm using the hue saturation shindig right now; I can't believe you made this the day after I blocked in my first photoshop thingy, lol. Though the highlights/lighter layer is kind of... elusive to me...
Anyways, if you can point me to a place where the shadows and highlights are better explained, it would be awesome.
Thanks again for posting a tutorial!

Dreamkeepers In reply to Star-Seal [2009-06-21 21:26:02 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... A tutorial on lighting and shadows would definitely be a fun one. It's definitely on my list of tutorials to produce, albeit at an achingly slow pace.

Here's a painting tutorial from Lackadaisy - it touches on lighting a bit:
[link]

Hmm... Been trying to Google lighting tutorials, and it's mainly about photography.. What about this?
[link]
Or this... This looks kinda thing-ish:
[link]
I haven't really read any of those, but they look more special effects oriented, and less lighting oriented.

Darn... Maybe I should bump the 'lighting' tutorial up in my cue.

I wish i knew who Cleese was so it could be even more hilarious than it was XD
Hmm.
Very useful; I didn't know about anything after block coloring in layers.
I wold say the humor was a liiiiiittle heavy; maybe tone it down to a few well-placed witticisms.
And vivid red? HMMM.... maybe even...
INCARNIDINE?
Lol me and my love of fancy words for mundane things.
Thanks for doing this! I look forward to more; it was great!

Dreamkeepers In reply to Star-Seal [2009-06-19 00:06:02 +0000 UTC]

Cleese is one of the Monty Python actors, like from the movie 'Holy Grail', a fun example of British humor.

Thanks for the thoughts on the humor balance, too! I definitely want the tutorials to be functional first and foremost.

Incarnidine - I haven't heard that word in forever, thanks! Made my day.

Star-Seal In reply to Dreamkeepers [2009-06-19 00:46:31 +0000 UTC]

Incarnadine (bloodred) I learned from Macbeth, about a year after picking up smaragdine (emerald green) from, I believe, Fall of the House of Usher. Only I remembered it wrong so a character from that time period's name is 'Smarmadine.' I should introduce you sometime. He's buckets of fun. And gore.

Dreamkeepers In reply to Star-Seal [2009-06-21 21:16:42 +0000 UTC]

Buckets of fun-gore? I'm there! 8 )

And your mention of classic titles is inspiring me to revisit some of those older authors... Lots of good stuff is made by dead guys.
