Description The alpine newt (Ichtyosaura alpestris) is a species of urodele, an order of amphibians also including salamanders. It is 12 centimeters long. Males are smaller than females. Its body is brown, greenish or gray-bluish with spots. Its belly is bright orange. During the breeding season (in spring), the flanks of the male take on a gray-blue color and a small fine and regular crest appears on its head.

Even if it spends a lot of time on dry land, the alpine newt is very comfortable in water and can remain in apnea for several minutes. It is also in the water that the female lays its eggs and the larvae develop. It can live 20 years.

Zoophagous, the alpine newt feeds on worms, woodlice, amphibian larvae, insects ...

It is found in central Europe and in southern Europe. The alpine newt frequents calm and shallow water points (ponds, ponds and streams), but also plains and all reliefs up to 3,000 meters above sea level.

Classified LC (Least Concerned) on the IUCN red list, the alpine newt is protected in most countries. In Europe, it is registered, like all amphibians, in the Berne Convention. The threats hanging over him are agriculture and aquaculture (use of pesticides), pollution and destruction of water points, use of biological resources.
