Description
A little progress chart of each moment where I believed I was at the top of my game drawing wise.Drawn March 5, 2014: I knew I could draw better, but this was the point where I had been drawing like this for the last 2 years, I hit a plateau and I had no idea how to get past it, I didn't even really want to get past it... until I thought to myself, hey, Yardley's a cool drawer and the comic look really cool , maybe I should aim for that. Also at this stage I knew literally 0 about coloring characters and shading.
Drawn October 2, 2014:almost 7 months later I had been slowly practicing more and more, trying to get down Yardley's are style, in this photo I was over the moon with Scourge's hand, it looked just like how Yardley drew it, and the inking looked like the comics too! I was so so so happy I couldn't stop looking at it. Looking back on it now, although I didn't even know it it was still lacking that Archie feel I was going for and I had no idea why? Since the previous drawing I had improved the vibrancy of color on the characters however I had no idea which colors to use to shade with (I thought that these colors were fine). I remember looking at scourgeysbestbuddy's picture of one of her characters and she said that she was going practicing archie style coloring, so I spent ages looking at it and trying to replicate the same effect here. It was more of a lasso tool and then gradient effect that I used here.
Drawn August 2015: 10 months later. I was hell bent on getting Yardley's body proportions 100% correct. I would have spent the longest time re-sizing and thinning this version of scourge but in the end I made it! I had been trying to emulate Yardley for the last 10 months prior to this picture but in this picture I actually sat down and thought, I want to get at least 1 comment saying "wow you draw like Yardley" Sadly I didn't get such a comment but looking back at it now It doesn't look that much like Yardley's drawing besides maybe the body proportion and quills and muzzle (maybe ears). I wanted to get this down so much that I only practiced drawing characters I wanted to look like Yardley's style on this quarter turn pose standing straight so people could see the entire body. Also, at this time I had severely improved in my coloring ability (replicating matt herms). I knew how to choose the most luscious colors but the thing I lacked was knowing which shading colors to choose, I wasn't as adventurous with choosing the dark colors and I certainly had no set formula for choosing the depth colors either. Also what I want to note, is that I actually begun putting detail on the characters, in past drawings I just made things flat when I couldn't be bothered adding depth and detail, but in this drawing I drew every little thing, from the show soles to the glasses intricacies. I was so so so happy with this drawing when I made it!
Drawn March 13, 2016: Drawn 7 months later. I sort of went through a stage where I picked up how to do things really fast when it came to Yardley and Herms, I started releasing tutorials on the two just so I could solidy the knowledge I already had and this was the result. The colors were exactly how I would imagine Herm's to color and the body proportions from the hands to face (to those pesky foot poses with one pointing upwards-those are so difficult to do). I was getting much more comfortable drawing in Yardley's style to the point where I could actually start posing the character with the body proportions. Likewise I could start giving the character facial expressions that werent just smiles (which is frankly tough to do in Yardley's Style. This is the next level in my drawing ability and in my opinion the closets I've gotten to drawing like Yardley, no comments on saying that I draw like Yardley, but that's the goal! Looking forward to see what the next drawing will look like in the next 7 months! How exciting I can hardley (lol) wait!
Hope this helps anyone who want's a little bit of inspiration, that is very possible to get better, just need the practice and the drive!

Pretty awesome! If someone had shown me the first one and the last one separately, I would think that they were done by a different artist. A word of advice, though: Don't become so hellbent on emulating one specific style that you neglect the fundamentals. If you try to merely imitate, your art will only be as good as your best reference. So switch up the angles, draw different things, etc. I am by no means a professional artist, but I know that my art really improved once I learned to draw real life objects before "converting" them to a style I liked.

Appreciate the advice
I agree with you, unfortunately a lot of sketches I do which I don't post on DA are majority different angles. Unfortunately though spending most of my time on commissions the buyer wants the characters portrait so I have to stay within those guidelines majority of the time. But I spend majority of my free drawing doing all sorts of angles Lots of good advice there though, but at the moment i'm pretty limited to what I can and can't draw

Man, seeing this makes me wish that Scourge was still around in the comics. That progression is very awesome.

It really makes you feel accomplished when you see how far you've came from just a couple years ago, doesn't it? =3
I think you've gotten really good at emulating Yardley and Herm's styles. Hopefully you'll share your secrets with the rest of us haha
Nicely drawn, man. I can't wait to see more from you in the future.

WOW! that's definitely some motivation right there, seeing this makes me want to re-set my tablet EVEN MORE! >w<
See, my laptop sometimes gets very slow, so I soft reboot it, everytime I do that I lose SAI, re-download it and then have to find my disk so I can re-install the tablet settings, so I can have pressure sensitivity ^w^ Thing is, I left the disk at my grandmothers house, so, hopefully I can visit tomorrow to pick up my disc xD Of course, from now on I plan to keep the disk with me at all times >w<
Great work on the improvements! I can't wait until I become a great artist like you
