So I had a theory after drawing Infinite. I think that he's a wolf. Reason being: He bares similarity to the custom hero that is a wolf, similarities being the shape of head as well as the shape of the tail. Also when you look at the cutscene he is in, when he tilts his head downwards the helmets shape looks just like the custom heroes character's head.Also, the fact that he is called "Infinite" made me think: "What if he himself is a customisable character" and that the bad guy in the game has an infinite possibility to the way he looks (as changed by the player).
Also, what if Infinite is an evil version of the customization character from another dimension? Ok that last one is a stretch, but those are the things percolating in my head!
What do you guys think? This is all just speculation, be interested to here what y'all think

Infinite is a jackal. He is a mercanary of Eggman and was the leader of a group named the Jackal Squad.

I'll take it one step a little far fetched. He's INFINITE in the Future. But due to a conflict with himself. Literally. He accidentally sent the Phantom Ruby in a certain point in time it was found. My reasoning is personal speculation mixed with Sonic Mania spoilers. So. DON'T READ if you haven't played Sonic Mania. Because it's great!
My belief is that Infinite was corrupted by the Phantom Ruby from Sonic Mania. And is fighting Modern Sonic due to his younger self coming in contact with the thing. And so, wants to prove to the jewel that's superior to Sonic. Like how a crazy ex-girlfriend would fight another girl to prove she's better. Only, he accidentally brought someone else. Himself. The "Rookie." Or the Custom Character. And to make it worse. This is a Era where Eggman was planning something big. So. They gotta beat Eggman, Metal Sonic, Infinite with his Manipulation of Time and Dimensions, who's brought in Chaos and Shadow and Zavok to fight for him.
And how did Classic Sonic get there?

Angel Island. A place where many wonders exist. Sonic and Tails decide to go there to visit their old pal: Knuckles, wondering why Angel Island is a little on the low side. Only to find out, Robotnik is trying to mine the island for Chaos Energy or any sort of path to the Master Emerald. Only to come across this new jewel. Warping our heroes and villains.
When Robotnik was mining the island when he was trying to find a new entrance to the Master Emerald. His bots find this Phantom Ruby and quickly devise it's time travel related and so, Robotnik decides to create his new armada, Sonic and Tails and Knuckles, sent back in time go to Green Hill. And by the time they reach Titanic Monarchy. Robotnik has successfully made Little Planet his own. Now. Sonic and Tails beat him. But. the Ruby reacts violently and sends our hero and our villain to the Phantom Ruby's own Zone... Which I'll coin. The Time Gap. Or the Time Zone. Sonic then finds out that one of Eggman's newest bots has Free Will and tries to take the Jewel for himself. Only for Ro-butt-nik, The Heavy King and Super Sonic to have a case of Triple Trouble. Sonic overpowers the villains and tries to contain the Phantom Ruby with the Chaos Emeralds. Only to have Sonic be traveling to the Modern Sonic timeline. The Chaos Emeralds returning to the Special Zones with a firework explosion the face of a Cocky Sonic as Little Planet returns to it's normal time-cycle. Tails and Knuckles, worried, but confident their friend will return. He always does.

I never thought of that after you said about this! Who knows? He could be the evil kind of Buddy the Wolf from another dimension! We will have to see once the game comes out!

Something tells me that Infinite's design is set in stone, not customizable. Based off all the villians in past games, their designs were never changed by the player. But who knows, all will be revealed whem the game is released.

If... Original the Character is meant to represent the player, hence, a fan, then Infinite should mean to be the "negativity".
Summing up, a perfect parabole of how the fans must destroy the negativity of the fandom while everyone else around is conquering everything.
Yeah, I'm crazy, but if that's the case, I hope Infinite to have plenty of 4th-wall-breaking lines in the game.

the first time i saw him i just thought he was the dark gaia copy of custom (like mephilis can clone himself to look like shadow; thats my theory lol)

Design wise, unless Infinite has more than one design planned, I only see this being a problem if the customs don't all have the same general body shape. They will all probably have ears that don't exceed Infinite's helmet design, but spines on a Hedgie are going to be more difficult to fit into that helmet. XD

Cool theory!! But I think it's more your second theory, the evil Version, because you can see the custom character and Infinite in the Trailer at the same time.

So Infinite would look like a dark version of our character as any animal, male or female? Interesting but too cliche I hope they are more original than that.

Hmmm.... that's an interesting theory. I have to say, I've thought of the same thing after looking through the trailer again. It could also explain the red aura surrounding him, as the custom character's main fur color is red.
The eye on Infinite and the overall vibe of him reminds me of Mephiles from Sonic 06, who took the form of Shadow but the appearance was changed somewhat to fit that character, then again to look like a more demonic version. I know people will bash Sonic 06, but the idea behind Mephiles's character and appearance HAS stayed with the fandom and has probably inspired the writers and developers of Sonic Forces. It could end up being a throwback or something of the sort.

Oh yeah, I remember in the trailer was uncommented symbol of switching. I think this could be very true they would use FC features (at least the race) for switching it to a villain. You know what would so much irony? XDDD if the moral of the game was that "Don't create fan characters! It hurts and destroys Sonic's Universum!!"
