Once from a high ranking family among a decently large pack in the South, Serena was moved at a young age to a much smaller pack to live with relatives who recently joined the smaller pack themselves to escape the illness that was spreading. Her immediate family and birth pack slowly succumbed to a prominent sickness in the South. She never displayed any symptoms and thus there was no reason to believe she could be carrying the virus herself. It didn't take long for her to become close friends with the Alpha pair's oldest son, Ashbel, whom was in line to take over this very traditional pack. The pair were always close to one another, but sadly, could never truly be together. The pack had very strict beliefs and rules, and a major one separated subordinates from Alphas; only those of near equal standing to the Alpha's family could offer an offspring to be wed to the next-in-line. Of course, time would pass and the pair had to move on, each becoming a mate to someone else, but still their friendship was strong. Of course, when Ashbel had a litter with his Alpha mate, Serena was somewhat depressed. She wish it was herself who'd be able to have his pups, and give him a strong family, but it wasn't meant to be; not at the time, at least.

A few years passed, and it was clear that Ashbel's family was being torn apart by their oldest son. He was incredibly abusive to all; even his family. Ashbel confessed to Serena in confidence that he and his mate argued often on what to do with their son, he was a danger to the pack and himself, but the laws would only allow him to be removed from the pack if he was disowned; a massive shame to the family. Ashbel was a loving father; always wanted a family. In his time of need, Serena was there for him, and it took only a single intimate night together for Serena to become pregnant. Several weeks in, and it was clear the virus was not only moving towards the pack, but Serena (being from a pack that too suffered from it) was not safe from it. She gave birth prematurely after eventually becoming so ill, she could not move. Hidden far from the pack as to keep them safe from the illness, but also her pups from execution or worse, Serena eagerly awaited Ashbel's arrival to meet his offspring. However, when he found her he was far from happy; in fact he looked worse then he did the night he ran to her sobbing over his son. He said nothing as he grabbed their largest pup, Hidde, and left silently. Serena and the rest were never heard from since; most likely deceased.

The eldest son and heir to the Alpha rank to a smaller pack of the South, Ashbel lived a life of luxury but also hardship. He was chosen to be the next-in-line purely on a technicality, so he never really believed he deserved his special treatment; but as a pup he met one who never treated him any differently purely due to his future title. Her name was; Serena. She was from an allied pack, and he knew she was from a high standing family there, but his parents explained that due to her being dispelled from a plagued pack, she'd never be able to ascend above the rank her family in his pack had (Which was middle-low classed ranks at best). Still the pair quickly became inseparable, at least until it came time for his training. At that point he was forced to keep his distance, and act his rank, of course they'd sneak off every now and then, but not nearly as much time was spent together as they did in their pup-hood. Ashbel soon found out he was betrothed to she-wolf who was indeed from a high standing family in the pack (The only, actually) and thus she was the only available female to him. They were mated as soon as possible, and while he'd prefer his Serena, he was excited to become a father. The pair had a healthy litter, and due to the same technicality, their eldest son would be the next-in-line after Ashbel.

A few years passed and it was clear that his family was self destructing purely due to his chaotic son, the heir. He and his mate fought often on what to do with their now juvenile son, but Ashbel thought he could believe in him; he'd pull through for sure. On one night in particular, as their other offspring were clearly being abused by their sibling, Ashbel and his mate fought for hours on whether or not they should disgrace the family name, and dispelled the troublesome heir and name another, or keep him for a while longer and see if he pulls through. Needless to say it resulted in him fleeing to Serena's side to plead his sob story. She was the only in his mind who truly loved him; and for that, he gave in and did what he wanted from the moment he saw her as more then a friend. After that, Ashbel was seemingly much calmer much to his mate's dismay. She had her suspicions and at some point several weeks into Serena's pregnancy, she found out who the pups belonged to. So, she gave Ashbel an ultimatum. Either she'd dismiss their son, or Ashbel could save a single pup from Serena's litter and that pup would take the brunt of their son's abuse to save the pack from his rage. Ashbel was distraught to say the least, but he had to make a choice... one he wish he hadn't to this day.
