Description Hey folks!

So I’m taking this opportunity to announce that I will be taking on a second project in the near future. It’s an older project of mine, which many of you who have been following me on Deviantart for a while have perhaps seen before.

The basic idea: This is the Button family, a family of gamers. Each one represents a different genre of video game. From left to right - Ridley (the classic console gamer), Denise (the casual/fitness gamer), Gwen (the music and rhythm gamer), Marc (the hardcore, violent gamer), and Patrick (the arcade gamer). As individuals and as a family, they’re very wrapped up in their hobby and it informs the way they interact with others and the world. The working title of this project will be “Buttons.”

I know, it probably doesn’t sound that great. But I have a lot of great ideas and it will have heart, something seemingly missing from family-centered comedies these days.

For those who are worried about how this will affect Ross Boston, worry not! Ross Boston, as well as fulfilling all of the perks from the donations to my campaign, are my main focus and my job right now and I will continue working on that primarily. “Buttons” will be the thing I do when I just feel like I need to develop something else so I don’t get too burnt out on Ross Boston.

Currently, I can’t say how this project will manifest but I suspect it will most likely be a webcomic just like Ross Boston. I also have no tentative starting date, but I will let you know more as this project develops, if it actually does. The only thing I can say with reasonable certainty is I will let the first episode of Buttons play out as a pilot and decide once that has been finished whether or not I want to continue doing it. We’ll see what happens.

I’ve had this one floating around in my head for 3 years now, so I’m excited to finally be getting it off the ground! Now that I actually know a thing or two about making a comic, I can make this the best thing it can be right now.

Hope you like them!

~Drew

Thank you! It's funny, Marc seems to be getting the most attention this time around (whereas most people really gravitated toward Gwen in the past). I'm not complaining, of course.

You could have a "girls" gamer too (barbie fashion, pets, etc games). I know its not an actual genre but it could be fun to parody what some companies think girl gamers are.

Casual gamers could be there too, including a grandma obsessed with farmville.

I'm sure he would play some of those, but I already have another character lined up for that.

Somehow the big chins you draw on girls (Gwen here) are really attractive and appealing.

I know animating is about 1,000 times harder and longer than making comics, but I bet if you animated the pilot episode for this, you'd be able to gather a really big audience to start it out!
because people are lazy, and would rather watch something than read it, because watching takes no effort at all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to FrostDrive [2012-06-18 20:19:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Haha, animating is about a thousand times harder on the person doing it, and easier on the person enjoying it. Where comics are easier on the person making it, but "harder" for the person reading it, potentially. But it just doesn't balance out. I know I can make what I want as a comic, where if it were an animation, I'd be more likely to be less pleased. Just because there'd have to be a lot of outside involvement with other people, I guess.

FrostDrive In reply to DrewGreen [2012-06-18 20:40:04 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeh, that's a good way to put it.
Animations 1,000 times harder on the creator, and just a bit easier for the viewer. xD

That's totally understandable.

If there was a member of their family who was into PC MMO's, then he/she would have to be the black sheep of the family. Or a total shut in.

DrewGreen In reply to dynamicsketch [2012-06-18 20:19:35 +0000 UTC]

It's very important for me to say that while the Button family may not represent all types of gamers, there are certainly other characters that will fill in some of those gaps.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dynamicsketch In reply to DrewGreen [2012-06-19 01:43:17 +0000 UTC]

Wonder if we'll get the typical types? The XBot/Nintendo hater, the clod who thinks that every recently-announced Zelda game will not be as good as "Ocarina of Time," the idiot who thinks that story should come before any actual gameplay, etc.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to dynamicsketch [2012-06-19 02:04:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, I definitely won't be using any actual video game or company names, it'll all be analogues and just made-up stuff. But I'm sure some of those themes will be approached.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dynamicsketch In reply to DrewGreen [2012-06-19 14:19:15 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure you could find some way to make the point across even by making stuff up. Seeing how many webcomics tend to just simply mention the name of a recently released or popular video game just to pander to its fans, it sure does come off as lame to me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to dynamicsketch [2012-06-19 16:39:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, this is definitely not going to be another "Penny Arcade" meant to make fun of or bring up current events in video games. There are perhaps literally thousands of those and most of them are garbage. This is a story about characters, and how their passtime informs their behavior and the way they interact with others. So there's actually no need to use real brands and company names and actual video games. In fact, it's more fun to make things up.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dynamicsketch In reply to DrewGreen [2012-06-19 23:05:33 +0000 UTC]

I agree that it'd be far more appealing to make stuff up and not use real brands and names. And you're right, webcomics that try to be like Penny Arcade suck. But many webcomics suck because they will just reference any type of real brand. Sort of like when PVP had a filler storyline with two dumbasses arguing over which is better--Twizzlers or Red Vine. How stupid.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to dynamicsketch [2012-06-21 07:08:42 +0000 UTC]

That is stupid, because the answer is obviously "Twizzlers" and I don't know who would eat Red Vines. Also, isn't PVP a game-related webcomic? What does that even have to do with games?

Of course, it is that person's webcomic and not mine. So they can do what they want with it.

I should make it a point to mention that "Buttons" is not a joke-a-week comic. Much like my current comic, it's story-based. It's not an action adventure the way Ross Boston is, but it still follows a story and each update adds to that. Most gamer comics are joke-a-week or joke-a-day. Not only do I think I could even DO a comic like that (since I don't have that kind of humor) but also, I would like to contribute something a little different.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dynamicsketch In reply to DrewGreen [2012-06-21 11:59:43 +0000 UTC]

Hell yeah! I've tried Red Vines before--They suck! I get Twizzlers by the two-pound bags (because they're resealable). PVP seems more story-based really. It hardly ever has to do with games though it sure does venture into "boring-me-to-death" nerd territory.

I figure that you are better than that joke-a-week stuff. I need to figure out how to start a comic of my own. Either "The Netherhood" or "Stargirl." I'm not much on telling stories. I mean I had ideas for "Stargirl" but the story I had in mind went sour because people are too stupid to understand my ideas. They want everything to be like the other lame webcomics that go nowhere. What's the use? My ideas are doomed to fail because of the idiot masses.
