Description
Hello! This is a commission done for the wonderful , one of the best pixel artists I know, and she's absolutely a great person to boot! Do yourself a favor and go check out her sweet, candy-coated gallery. ;D
I don't remember her ever mentioning the name of the character, but the blond-haired girl you see before you is like a virtual representation of Firstfear, and standing next to her is her friend, Bunce. The two of them work at the Numnum Cafe (pictured in the background).
Speaking of backgrounds, I rarely do them, but I'm so glad I'm offering it as an option for my commissions right now. It's great practice and I'm finding they really do take an image to the next level!
For those who are interested, I'm still open for commissions. You can see the details here: [link] I could definitely use the help, so take a look and see if you'd like to commission me!
Firstfear and I are very happy with the image, and we both hope that you all will be, as well. Full view, and enjoy!
Adobe Illustrator CS. Sketched in Photoshop.
This image was created by me, Andrew T. Green, and was commissioned by Firstfear. The characters pictured are (c) her. This image is not for use in any way, shape, or form without the express permission of Firstfear. As with all of my commissions, I am not authorized to give you permission to use it, so please don't ask.

Mm, what delicious candy-colours!
The pointy chin is such a nice stylistic touch.

Thank you! I've been drawing a lot of pointy-chinned ladies lately...not sure why.

Thank you! That means a lot! And I'm glad the response to the background has been so positive. That really helps my confidence with backgrounds.

Hahaha <3 "numnum" made me laugh! Great color scheme on this one--it reminds me of the Candyland game, which always made me frustrated because it never actually yielded any candy.

Thank you! Yeah, the "Numnum Cafe" is definitely awesome, and incredibly cute.
Our household was definitely a Candyland household. My siblings and I used to play it all the time, and I used to pretend my action figures were in Candyland by using the board as the floor for my toys. XD

Is this one of the recent commissions you took?
The whole thing makes me think candy, haha. I love the trees being circles and striped. They remind me of lolipops for some reason.
I looked at her character in her gallery and I really like how you took her and gave her your style. Great job. I bet she loved it

It is, indeed! And if the trees remind you lollipops, then that's appropriate, since she called them lolli-trees when giving me the description for the commission. ;D

I know I should like the main character or something, but she's terribly outclassed by the background. It's the trees! They're just really pretty kick ass. And when i get tired of them my eye strays to the stand. Anyway it's amazing of course. Can't believe you do these damn things in illustrator. My mind will never accept it.

Well, it is a pretty good background. ;D
Yep, Illustrator. See, I look at all of those amazing realistic vector portraits and I wonder how on earth folks do that stuff. I mean, I know how, but...the patience! I do not have it, I'm afraid.

Awesome work. The colors are beautiful (both by your use of tones and gradients and by the way everything looks so vivid without being overly saturated), the background is splendid, and the overall style is great. I'd have expected such a mix of curvy and pointy outlines styles to look strange, but the result is really good.

Well, if you think of anything you'd like for me to draw, just send me a note and we can set up another commission! I'm not planning on closing commissions, and I don't mind doing more than one for a single person.

But I'll stick to Photoshop and Illustrator. Thanks anyway. ;D

theres nothing wrong with low saturation. This just happens to be part of his style . Not everything needs to be omg bright and in your face haha. The muted tones give it a nice feel. to me anyways.

yes, but in others draws of you, this saturation not are current... you others draws have more bright and look more good

God, that background is delicious. Makes me wish I'd ordered one, but my PayPal is running low. XB; I love all that color.
How do you get your Illustrator vertices so pointy?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DrewGreen In reply to neekko [2009-04-30 05:26:06 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I'm glad to hear the background was successful!
When you say pointy vertices, I assume you mean the tapered ends of the lineart?
And don't worry, your character is going to look awesome without a background. Sometimes simplicity is best, and I think this is one instance where you'll have to agree with me on that. ;D

neekko In reply to DrewGreen [2009-04-30 12:17:37 +0000 UTC]
Yer welcome!
That's what I meant. I've only been able to make the ends square-like. My inability to figure out most of Illustrator's functions is what's keeping me from using it instead of Photoshop for my vector work.
The more I look at the sketch, I may just have to! I've made it my desktop wallpaper and I can't stop staring because it's so pretty. *_*

DrewGreen In reply to neekko [2009-05-08 03:07:01 +0000 UTC]
Getting the ends of a stroke in Illustrator is a bit of a work-around, but this method works really well. Do this with a couple of lines, play around with it, and you'll get the hang of it and how to apply this method to a whole piece of art:
Using the pen tool, make a line with a stroke, but no fill. Do a curved line for the sake of learning.
Then, if I remember correctly (I can never remember this on the top of my head), go to Edit>Object>Outline Stroke.
The stroke will become a fill. In that form, you can delete points and play with the handles to change the thickness of a line and to taper the ends.
If that doesn't make any sense, then I probably didn't remember the location of the action perfectly. Let me know if you have any troubles and I'll try to help. ;D

Object, yeah, not Edit! Thank you! I don't know why I can never remember that. XD
