Description Hey folks!

The time has finally come. I am, after six and a half years on DA, finally making a tutorial on how I use Adobe Illustrator CS. The tutorial will teach users how to create a simple cartoon character image, like this picture of Pac Duncan, which is the featured image in the tutorial.

I'm about a third of the way finished with the actual tutorial (I took over 70 screen caps in the process so there's a TON left to compile) but I'll certainly let you know when it's done.

Enjoy!

Adobe Illustrator CS.

Pac Duncan and "The Duncan Button" logo are (c) me, Andrew "Drew" Green. This image is not for use in any way, shape, or form without my permission first.

I'm afraid I don't totally understand your comment...

I don't use livetrace. Version CS doesn't have it, and you'll see the process when the tutorial is up.

I am working with illustrator every day.If someone want picture,I can do sketch on paper,Line it with ink, scan,Then use live trace option. Then I will have perfect lines, and after expanding I can use live paint to fill colors+some random shapes to add some details.Easy.Isn't it?

I guess, but like I said, the version of Illustrator I use doesn't even have it. And ultimately, using livetrace, while it has its ups, kind of takes the artistry out of the program.

I'm really excited for this..I really need to try and read up on using it..It seems so difficult to grasp at first (at a glance)..I know this'll help..I might be taking a graphic design program and I know i'll have to learn it anyways...lol

Well, I try to explain everything that's pertinent to the subject in the program, so when the tutorial is posted, you'll have to let me know how I did. ;D

DrewGreen In reply to KoniraThax [2010-08-05 17:05:50 +0000 UTC]

I wanted to draw a character that I have absolutely no issues with drawing from memory. It was either him or Charlie, and I chose him because I was in a Pac kinda mood. ;D

KoniraThax In reply to DrewGreen [2010-08-05 17:13:08 +0000 UTC]

Pac mood. XD
It's good you can draw him so easily. It's always nice when that happens. LOL.

DrewGreen In reply to KoniraThax [2010-08-05 17:18:42 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I have no problem drawing any of the Duncan family, it's a great feeling. It usually takes a while for that kind of comfort to come with a character, let alone a whole cast.

Awesome!
Which means you'll have no trouble when you put them into production.

I'm glad! Illustrator is very frustrating at first, and I can't say my tutorial will cure that, but...just take it slow, experiment with it...you'll get the hang of it.

awesome! i've always wondered how people use illustrator for that, and i definitely loooove the way YOU work with it.
besides posters, logos and packaging and stuff like that, i'm terrible when it comes to vectors ):

DrewGreen In reply to Niza-Niabock [2010-08-05 16:56:03 +0000 UTC]

Illustrator is almost exclusively a graphic design program, it seems. But if you know how, you can make it sing and use it to actually...you know, illustrate stuff.

I hope you'll stick around for the tutorial! It's coming soon!
