Hey guys!For day #14 of Villain Month, I give you Dr. Robotnik. He's holding an egg to signify his nickname, Dr. Eggman.
Let me get this out of the way for honesty's sake: I don't like Dr. Robotnik, I don't generally like the Sonic games, and I absolutely don't like this image (aside from his mustache, which I'm happy with). Not only is it shoddy-looking, it's also not wholly accurate and it's of a character that I just don't really care for. I think the Sonic games and their villain are products of the early/mid 90s and the franchise has had a lot of trouble moving beyond that in the right direction in recent years, and everyone knows it. I think the Sonic Team hasn't made a good Sonic game in a long time, and I don't think it's fair to fans to keep making cheesy 3D adventure titles with crappy hair-band wannabe music that doesn't pertain to the nostalgia that the older games have in any way shape or form, let alone the sense of speed and shear action that made the series famous in the first place.
But I know a lot of people like Sonic the Hedgehog, and in turn like Robotnik, so I chose to add him to my list of villains worth drawing for the sake of other people, not myself.
I have little else to say about this image. I like my artwork and I'm not afraid to give myself a pat on the back, but I think this image is the worst one I have posted for Villain Month yet, and I'll have to make up for it somehow in the coming days. I apologize in advance.
The good news is, I like Rouge the Bat because she's from one of the only Sonic games I ever actually enjoyed: Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle, as it was called on the GameCube). This is ironic, since the Sonic Adventure games are generally not well-liked, but I thought SA2:B was a really fun game with a lot of replay value and some cool characters. So you'll probably see Rouge pop up this month, and she'll look infinitely better than this horrible, bland image.

To me, the name of Dr. Robotnik does have an air of, how shall I say, villainous/mad scientist personality thou it does kind of give away a theme of the villain. However, Dr. Eggman makes it sounds like the villain is egg based as like a rooster.
What do think?

Most villains have names that give away their theme or motive. Good examples are Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman, The Joker, The Penguin, the Riddler, and Two Face (amongst others) from the Batman universe. So I think it works with Robotnik! ;D
Eggman just makes me think of breakfast, and there's hardly anything frightening about that.

Oh yea, I forgot about them.
Now it makes me wonder how many video game villains that have names that gave away their theme/ability. (Well other villains besides the Mega Man Robot Masters, duh)

Most of them are pretty notorious for it, especially smaller enemies and goons. And then there's the fact that some enemies have names that just sound evil, even if they don't actually mean anything evil. Like Ganon/Ganondorf from the Zelda games, for instance. If his name was, I dunno, Bobby instead, he wouldn't be nearly as intimidating.

Actually, THAT would be funny. Imagine, Link and Ganon are staring each other from across a large room, Link has his shield up in front of him preparing to charge, Ganon says something insulting/mockingly, Link charges, and right when Link is about to attack, Ganon's mother bursts in though a wall saying "Bobby!! What have I told you about your ROOM!" Link looks stupefied Ganon
But anyway, yea I know. Just thinking out loud.

Ah, so this is the new Robotnik. I'm not a fan; I liked the old design better. But, if this is the one you're drawing, he looks alright.

In terms of aesthetics, Dr Eggman gets my vote.
In terms of character personality and quirkiness, Dr Robotnik gets my vote.
Japanese/English naming conundrums abound...

I take it Eggman is the original Japanese name, eh? When you grow up calling him Dr. Robotnik, you kind of get used to it. ;D

Actually, I knew all along that Eggman is his Japanese name., But since Sonic Adventure came out, it's like the naming conventions have to be standardized; nowadays people hardly call that villain Robotnik, while some others would call him Dr "Robotnik" Eggman (though THAT isn't canon, really

I think it's best to just choose one or the other. There seems to be a lot of confusion on the subject with many people. I really don't understand why they had to change his U.S. name to Eggman, but whatever.
The whole situation is similar to what happened with Bowser: He was originally named King Koopa and had a sort of different design. By the third game, he became Bowser. I personally support the theory that they are not the same character, but I know in my heart it's not true. ;D

I will say that I'm glad you did a sonic character! You should do Shadow next, wouldn't you love that?! I would haha.
Anyway, I think this looks really good. I especially like the coloring and the darker shading. I feel bad saying this too because I know you probably just through it together, but I don't really like his hands for some reason. They look a little awkward. I know this in't a serious piece of artwork or anything so don't hate me for saying it >.<
Overall i think it looks very nice though. You've been doing a great job with the villian month so far!

Haha, don't feel bad in saying that at all! There's nothing wrong with constructive criticism, especially when I agree with it. ;D
The hands look very awkward and don't match the character (who ordinarily has very large hands), and I freely admit that hands are one of my big weaknesses that I need to practice up on.
I'm neither here nor there with Shadow the Hedgehog, so I don't know if I care to draw him for Villain Month. But as I said above, I love Rouge the Bat, so expect her sometime eventually this month.

Rogue the Bat is pretty fun, I wouldn't mind seeing her either. Also, hands are supposedly one of the hardest things to draw so if that's your only weakness you're still doing great! I usually draw people from the waiste up just to avoid hands haha.

There are a ton of tricks that I subconsciously use to avoid drawing hands, I'm ashamed to say. They can be serious nightmares. ;D

Dude. He has a really cool artsy kind of look. Better than Dr. Robotnik deserves honestly. Don't judge so harshly! I like it better than the harley quin pic.

Man, I miss the older Sonic games, but the newest one, Sonic Unleashed, looks like it might bring back that old-school feeling.
I like this pic regardless, dude. Sonic's always been one of my faves (despite the fact that I loathe Vanilla Ice, never had any Shaq cards, or ate WOW chips or had spiked hair, though Nirvana rocked my CD player).
As for the Dreamcast, it was a solid system, it's just it never had the backing that Sega should have given it. Dreamcast is where Soul Calibur was born, after all.

I'm sorry to say that initial word on Sonic Unleashed is that is isn't as good as it really could be (though we all know initial word doesn't always reflect what we eventually slip into our video game systems). I think most people are down on the fact that he turns into a were-Sonic. I don't understand why they keep giving him features beyond the only one he needs: his speed.
Whenever you give a character an out-there feature, things are almost always bound to be bad. Like Mario, for instance. The lowest-selling canon Mario platformer to date was Super Mario Sunshine. The biggest complaint? The water jet pack, F.L.U.D.D.
If they would just make a Sonic game that was Sonic being fast and jumping and stuff, people would really appreciate it.
Anyway, I bought a Dreamcast at Dragon*Con 07 here in Atlanta for (I think) $20. I only have one game for it, Jet Grind Radio, but It's a really neat game! I'd like to buy more games for my Dreamcast, but money is tight right now. Aside from Soul Calibur, do you have any other suggestions?

A lot of powerful games were released on the Dreamcast. The two Marvel vs. Capcom games were released on it with high ratings and results. Power Stone was another good fighter.
Grandia was an RPG released for it not too long after, though it might be a bit scarce.

The best ones seem to go for a lot of places like ebay and Amazon, and I don't have tons of money to spend. But there are other good ones like Space Channel 5 that are at decent prices.

Try hitting up your local GameStop/Babbage's. They usually carry a lot of gems in their stock.

ahaha, i liked the games when i was younger, sonic 1,2,3, CD and sonic and knuckles, but i think they reeeeeally shoulda stopped after them. SOnic has outstayed his welcome i think it's been milked to death.

I think the Sonic games could still be good if they were updated in the right way. But where Mario games continue to be timeless, the Sonic Team chooses to try and make Sonic "current," and that's where he trips up. Shame, really.

OH MY GOD, the Chao game took up way too much of my time. It was so addictive!
The voice acting was bad but could have been worse (like Sonic the Hedgehog on Xbox360, for instance). Regardless, the game was fun and had tons of great missions. I really liked it!
