Description Hey guys!

For day #14 of Villain Month, I give you Dr. Robotnik. He's holding an egg to signify his nickname, Dr. Eggman.

Let me get this out of the way for honesty's sake: I don't like Dr. Robotnik, I don't generally like the Sonic games, and I absolutely don't like this image (aside from his mustache, which I'm happy with). Not only is it shoddy-looking, it's also not wholly accurate and it's of a character that I just don't really care for. I think the Sonic games and their villain are products of the early/mid 90s and the franchise has had a lot of trouble moving beyond that in the right direction in recent years, and everyone knows it. I think the Sonic Team hasn't made a good Sonic game in a long time, and I don't think it's fair to fans to keep making cheesy 3D adventure titles with crappy hair-band wannabe music that doesn't pertain to the nostalgia that the older games have in any way shape or form, let alone the sense of speed and shear action that made the series famous in the first place.

But I know a lot of people like Sonic the Hedgehog, and in turn like Robotnik, so I chose to add him to my list of villains worth drawing for the sake of other people, not myself.

I have little else to say about this image. I like my artwork and I'm not afraid to give myself a pat on the back, but I think this image is the worst one I have posted for Villain Month yet, and I'll have to make up for it somehow in the coming days. I apologize in advance.

The good news is, I like Rouge the Bat because she's from one of the only Sonic games I ever actually enjoyed: Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle, as it was called on the GameCube). This is ironic, since the Sonic Adventure games are generally not well-liked, but I thought SA2:B was a really fun game with a lot of replay value and some cool characters. So you'll probably see Rouge pop up this month, and she'll look infinitely better than this horrible, bland image.

I hope you guys like it more than I do.

Adobe Photoshop CS, about 40 minutes total.

i'm a HUGE Sonic fan and i can say that u nailed Robotnik/Eggman! i actually think his official name is Dr. Eggman, he was called Robotnik here in the States. i loved Sonic throughout the 90s and straight up to today, in fact i have Sonic tattooed on my right shoulder. And i still draw all my furries with kind of a Sonic style. XD But yeah, great job there!

Yeah, I actually kind of figured you'd like this one. ;D I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

I think it's really cool that you are really into Sonic, but I was never much of a Sonic fan, so this image was a bit of a downer for me. But I thought I should at least include him this month since he really is such a well-known villain and a lot of people do like him.

Yeah buddy! That's a great pic of Dr. E that u did......
Oh yeah i don't think there's anyone who don't know who Dr. Eggman/Robotnik is. i'll eventually include him too before all is said and done. Well i don't exactly like him but i do know that for every hero there has to be a villain. Or so they say......

Yeah, I actually do kind of like his button layout. I would have done it all the way down his coat, but I got a little lazy.

I'm glad you at least like the picture a little! Thanks for the kind words!

sure thing!

that's understandable though. SEGA hasn't made a good Sonic game ... since the Genesis really.

Though, it's not to say that the idea isn't feasible. I challenged myself for a design challenge and actually came up with a game style that would actually work. ... maybe I ought to post some of those notes, it's not like I'll be able to really do anything with them.

Oh, it's possible to create a good Sonic game. It just takes a bit of effort and understanding of what made the old games so beloved amongst fans, which Sonic Team always seems to miss completely.

Wow, there's a blast from the past! I'm quite nostalgic about Sonic actually, but only the old Sonic (first two TV series I think... and the original games). I have ZERO idea what's been going on in the Sonicverse since I was a little kid, but it seems to have exploded in popularity among a certain bracket of DeviantArtists!

The fact that they call him Eggman now is one of my pet-peeves though.

Yeah, I hate the fact that he is called Eggman now. I don't know if it's a nickname or if his name just suddenly changed, but it annoys me. It feel inconsistent and weird.

I hope I didn't offend you in my feelings toward the Sonic games, but I just never liked them that much. When I was a little kid, my sister liked the Sonic games, but I was a Mario/Nintendo loyalist so I hated them by default. Now that I'm older, I went back and played the old Sonic games and...I dunno, they just feel a little bit frustrating and broken at points. Perhaps it's because you're not supposed to take your time, you're just supposed to blaze through the stage before the time runs out/without dying.

I only vaguely remember the cartoon. I remember the guy who played Urcle in Family Matters did the voice of Sonic, though, which I always found amusing. ;D

Just for the sake of pointing this out: Eggman has always been his name in Japan. America translated his name as "Robotnik" initially. Come Sonic Adventure, SEGA of america decided they should use his name from Japan, so in the game, they had Sonic jokingly call Robotnik "Eggman".Β

As Sonic Adventure (DX) was the first Sonic game I played, I knew his as Eggman initially. I was confused when I picked up reprints of some of the earlier archie comics and saw him called "Robotnik" (and the horrible design courtesy of Sonic SatAm). Personally, I think "Robotnik" makes more sense, as he builds robots and all, but Eggman is the name I'm used to. (I use them both interchangeably, Β mainly to differentiate between games-cannon and the many many many many many western adaptations).

in other news, I do like this Robotnik's outfit better than the Sonic Boom one (though that one is not that bad).

Funny, I always suspected it was Urcle...

My Brother loved Sonic like it was his job, but he also hated Sega on principal. Oh teh conflict! I always had a foot in both camps, though I think Sonic was the only Sega game I ever...really...even saw. Hm.

And I'm not offended, it was never a big issue in my life.

The problem with Sega is that they were never able to look past what was current and "hip" at the time. Mario is cool because he's always kind of strange but never 80s strange or 90s strange or 2391 strange...he's just cool and strange. But Sonic still looks like he belongs in the 90s, like he was made for the group of kids that liked to listen to Vanilla Ice and had Shaquille (sp?) O'Neal trading cards and, later, liked to spike their hair while listening to grunge and eating WOW chips. He never moved beyond his time, and I think I noticed this aspect at a surprisingly young age: I just knew the games that I loved on Nintendo would still be great, but the games my sister loved on Sega would stop being "cool" after a while. Sadly, Sonic's success was also his demise and dip into cruddy games.

And don't worry about missing most of what Sega systems had to offer: I really don't know that much about them, either, to be honest. There had to be dozens of different Sega consoles in the span of about 12 or so years, which is obnoxious. The Dreamcast (the death of Sega as a console-maker) was cool, I guess.

Aw, I miss the 80s/90s.

I do remember when Dreamcast came out. That was big news in the gaming world.

Yeah, at first. But then the other three "pretty" systems came out a year later and effectively killed it, which is kind of a shame. I blame Xbox, but only because it gives me an excuse to blame Xbox...

Even though I like my Xbox 360. The gaming politicians living in my head don't always makes sense.

I miss the 80s: It must have been really interesting being one year old. ;D
